hi,
interested in a western saddle and have ridden in them many times and love them, but have never measured them, i am going to buy one online, so wondering sizing, if its not right when i get it i will sell it. but i would need a full size saddle, i ride in a 17 inch and my also have a 18inch. but western sizes are differ there full size is 16 inch why is this?

this is what part of the add says,
Approx sizes for the saddles are:

Pony 13"
Cob 14.5"
Full 16"

These seat measurements are taken from the inner base of the 'swell' to the cantle and equate to English sizes:

Pony 15/16"
Cob 16/17"
Full 17/18"

what do you think, thanks

Sounds like YOU need a 16" saddle but the horse needs one that fits width and length.

What saddle are you looking at as some on sale won't fit any horse?
PM me if you like

thanks a replying, i am really just ebay shopping, so i will diffo need a full size, was just wondering why the measure different as its confusing. but my horse is wide in the back and also has a high wither and a flat back, he is a funny wee shape, but i am willing to buy and sell if not right as on ebay, they are alot alot cheaper than in shops, i will just have to do alot of searching, and ask a few questions a long the way. thanks

I just had the saddler this morning to look at my saddles, both English and Western. He agreed that there was no point looking at my western saddle without a pad on as it was the pad that makes it fit. I use a parelli theraflex pad which is made out of the same stuff as the theraflex camping mattresses so it inflates with air to spread the pressure. Then you put shims in it that you can move around to raise and lower the saddle in different places. You can get the shims in different thicknesses. According to parelli you can follow the instructions and fit the pad yourself (but then they are American and in my experience of riding western in the US people generally just put any saddle on any horse, so that is still a massive improvement) but I prefer to have my saddler fit it as he knows what he is looking for far more than I do.
I think Korrector also make a similar product. These sorts of pads are pretty expensive (about £180, I got mine second hand) but incredibly useful because obviously you can't custom fit a western saddle like you can an English one and these pads make it possible. My saddler thought it was a really good idea anyway. (By the way I intentionally got a saddle slightly too wide for my horse so I could adjust it to fit with the pad and my saddler's help).
