Posting on behalf of my eldest daughter, she's taken a nannying job in Westmeath and is having serious horse withdrawals. Just wondering if there's anyone from the forum in the area she could meet up and hang out with at weekends. She'd love to get the chance to ride but she hates the thought of a riding school, if not riding (and she's quite good) she'd be happy to muck out and talk horses over a coffee or a beer. She's 29, very chummy and a good laugh...oh dear it sounds like I'm selling her! Anyone..any replies appreciated, thanks.

I don't think she will have many problems finding horses to ride, every second person you meet has some or knows someone that does so tell her to ask around. Riding is a bit different over here, not so structured and formal and she probably might enjoy a riding school, they tend to have jumping leagues and clubs etc. Tell her to grab a copy of "The Field Directory" she can find it online too and she can find some riding clubs and schools. She would not be that far from Annaharvey Farm if she has a car and that is big and runs cross country and clubs etc.

Only Cork and Kerry is in the South of Ireland. Otherwise it is Ireland/Rep of Ireland/Irish Free State/Éire

Try RC or a local hunt, she may be able to rent a horse. Treks aren't bad.

Where exactly is she located in the Westmeath?
As Irishlife mentioned Annagharvey is lovely place to go to; good horses, great x-country and very relaxed and friendly. Plenty of single travellers from abroad spend regular holidays there too, so they are well used to making people feel at home.
But there will be plenty of places around if that is too far.

Cheers everyone. Lark, I just did a search for Annaharvey Farm and it's only an hours drive from where she's working, so that sounds great. Thank you. She did find an equestrian centre last weekend, she went and watched some showjumping, but I don't know where it was.

Apologies for calling it S.Ireland....geography clearly not my strong point!

Well she will have plenty of opportunity in this area - on that I am sure.
Goodnes on the 'S.Ireland' I didn't even notice and if I did it wouldn't even have occurred to me to correct it
