I can only speak about Weston 1* in the past, as i've heard Janet Plant won't be designing it from now on... that might be false though, and would be a shame, as she's an excellent course designer. Previous years - course always very nice, flattish terrain (a couple of slopes but mostly on the flat), a couple of water jumps. Fences rode very well, rewarded attacking riding. There is always a decent ditch-with-brush in the 1*, quite a meaty fence, typical rider frightener. i fence-judged it one year and although it was ridden in a huge variety of ways, between the Pros and the amateurs, it didn't cause a single problem!
Janet always liked her skinnies, esp those skinnies with a horizontal wooden barrel at the top, so don't go to Weston with a dishonest horse who you can't trust to a skinny!
Did you know that the J* is the JRN Champs and you have to be selected to compete as a member of your Regional team, having competed in the JRN programme? Sorry if I'm telling you what you already know but it isn't clear from your post.
re Janet designing Weston Park, it is quite simple no Plant family, no Weston Park event, and how sad that would be...Janet is now at Hartbury, But I think, and I am very sure of this...that Janet's heart is still at Weston. I know that John and James (look in course builders calendar) will carry on her good work, and that Janet will be behind them, whipping in, but how on earth could BE let her slip thro their fingers. It beggars belief...how many other people in these times could start and succesfully run another three day...ie Brand Hall...Come on BE get real. She speaks her mind and by G** she gets the job done. I speak as one her many many old volunteers, and as long as she is there so will I and my family.
