Wet Fields!

I'm in Yorkshire and we have had sooo much rain recently. My field is really wet and is bubbling and gurgling although I don't have any large areas of standing water.

My question is, how do I manage the field? I only have two acres and on that I keep a 16.1 TB and 2 miniature shetlands as companions. At the moment I have got the field split up into sections and I keep the shetlands in a separate bit from my big horse. The problem is the shetlands as they are so greedy they eat everything so I currently have them in a small paddock which is now just a mud bath.

I am reluctant to give them the whole field in case they make the whole lot muddy. I do have the opporunity to use the neighbours land for grazing too but then they would have access to about 100 acres so not ideal!

Couldn't you fence off some of the 100 acres.

Let the minis have the 2 acres to themselves and fence off some of the 100 acres for the big horse, so long as they can see each other over the fence, they will be fine. My shetland has to go into solitary sometimes, his TB friend is on the other side of the fence. Shetlands do eat don't they - they are like locusts !!

Thank you for the replies! I am not sure that fencing off the 100 acres is feasible as the farmer grazes his sheep and cows on it. It is worth an ask though!

Do you think the shetlands would completely ruin the 2 acres if they had access to it all?

Can't you fence off a couple of acres of the 100 for your TB ? That's what I do - I have a huge field I can use, but I only actually use about 2 acres. Hopefully the mini's won't trash the 2 acres, especially as I assume they are not shod ?

I'd be more worried about the 2 mini's on two acres getting fat if its got lots of grass! Two acres is a fair size; can you let them all together on the lot, but muzzle the mini's during the day? Then before spring arrives and it starts to dry up, section them off and rest the land.

My three natives are on an acre and have already trashed it! But I still strip graze and let out the fencing by a couple of feet a day.

I have an acre for my two minis but only use 1/3 of it for summer and then gradually open up the rest for winter. I actually have too much grass so the 2/3 of an acre is grazed on by other horses first to eat most of it off. At the moment they are on about 1/3 of an acre and have noway trashed any of it. They will not get to the full acre before i restrict them during the summer.

Tiny feet dont really damage grass like bigger ones. I would have thought TBH 2 acres would be too much for them, if you dont want them fat.
