Our new horse is clean in the stable but very wet.

He is currently on straw but is just not absorbant enough so plan to move him onto shavings.

With a 'wet' horse would it be better to remove the wet bed each day or deep litter? Being used to straw, the price of shavings was a bit of a shock so want the most out of them!

In your situation I would try him on wood pellets or a mixture of a base of wood pellets and shavings on top if you don't like the appearance of wood pellets.

My lad is a big lad in a relatively small stable with an uneven floor so the wee was pooling. 3 bags of wood pellets under his bed has stopped this and having trialed taking the wet out ever day, I now leave it in and do a full muck out once a week... move remaining wood pellets to wet patch and top up with new, then put a layer of chopped rape straw bedding on top :) Highly absorbant and clean...would never have thought it!

I'm still playing about with them to be honest... a lot of people say not to wet them so that they have more capacity for soaking wet up... I have kinda been doing half and half... damping them with about half the amount of water you're supposed to. But I have also put a couple of bags in drybut have found they make their way out from under the bed a bit easier like this and get chucked on the muck heap whole so they're a bit of a waste!
