My youngest daughter used to ride my horse (18.1) because I was too much of a scaredy cat!! and he was too sharp for me.
He is on LWVTB as we felt she was too small to do any PC or RC comps on him. Shame as they were good together.
Im 15, and my new boy is 16 hh, almost 16.1 but quite croup high; I think he'll make 16.2/16.3 but I wouldnt have bought anything smaller I rode a 15.1 in dressage, and litterally felt like my legs were scraping the floor
I was just talking about this at the yard over the weekend.
I will never forget being hoisted up onto the back of a 16.1 thoroughbred at the age of 10 for a "lesson" from the very kindly neighbours daughter who used to let the snot nosed scruffy horse mad urchin (me) ride her horses. I am only 5'3" tall now so heaven knows how small I was then. Anyway I had to put my feet in the leathers as they could not make them short enough for me and then happily proceeded to walk, trot, canter away on this mountain of a horse. He was the most mild mannered, patient and lovely thoroughbred I have ever met and I can honestly say I will never forget him.
I rode a 17hh when I was 12. And ride the same sized horse now! Oh and before anyone judges- the horse was totally suited for me and my abilities! I prefer the feel of bigger horses and feel more confident on one weirdly enough!
hmm well here you go - i was 11, nearly 12 when i got Rocky. As a 16.2 ISH 4yo, yes crazy, i know. He is now 16.3, and ive just turned 16. He was on DIY livery right from the begining, and i was often left to my own devices with him. Hardly ever had any one watching when i was riding, let alone any help. He can buck for england, and i did come off a couple of times (luckily not hurt) but ive learnt to sit to them now. I have learnt SO much from him, and am so pleased we took the risk of buy him. (the risk being he was a 4yo and i had no experience with younsters, and no help [accept a leg up from mum! ]) Call my mum irrisponsible all you like, but ive loved it.. Hes the best thing thats ever happened to me..
I used to ride a 16hh when I was about 11 or 12, and an 18hh when I was around 14. Although I am 6ft 1 now so was probably quite tall for my age. Now ride anything from (very occasionally) a 13.2hh (Yeah yeah, too tall, I look ridiculous but not too heavy) to a 17hh, but wish the 18hh was still there, he was fab
I think horses can sometimes be safer for kids that little s**ts of ponies. I've been dumped far more times by ponies than horses.
when i was 15 i sold my pony and bought... a 17hh 3yro unbroken filly!
thankfully she was very sweet natured and i broke her in with no trouble and no help apart from a leg up from my non-horsey mum at the appropriate time
When I was 13 I went on a hunting holiday with my best friend and her parents in Ireland. I rode a chunky, kick type pony at home, and in Ireland I got put on a 17hh ISH the first day, which quite literally went vertical every time there was a queque before a jump. The second day I was put on a 17.2hh warmblood, which I couldn't stop! I also got taken out by every tree branch in the district (then I realised why all the masters were on little 15.2's). Two of the most terrifying days of my life!
From the age of about 11 my dads gf used to chuck me and my brother up on her horses, 16.2 - 17hh ex racers and a hard mouthed 17.2 hunter that just used to bugger off with me everytime we got to a track (its ok he knows when to stop!!!), i dont think she liked us
Same lady got her 5yr old daughter to lead her 16.3 stallion out to the field where another stallion was grazing in the field next door, horrible fight broke out betwwen the 2 boys and the mum blamed the kid
When I was 10 - and often mistaken for being 6yrs old or younger I used to hack out on my instructors 17.1hh show jumper We had a few crazy moments, but it was all good fun, even having to climb to the highest point of the muck heap wall to get on!
At 5 i had my first canter on my mums loan horse, a 16.3hh cleveland bay x mare !!! I used to ride her quite often ! I have ridden horses my whole life, didn't really have a transition from ponies to horses !!
i got my 16.2 heavyweight worker as a backed 3yo and i was 14,not quite a horse but I had lessons when I was 8 on an arab stallion to teach me to ride in a double bridle, but he was the best behaved stallion Ive ever known
