Hi there,
Can anyone give me some advise to when i take my mares sweet itch rug off. I've been told October, but is that early, or late Oct? And do I have to wait till the weather starts to get much colder?? I'm dying to take it off her, to see her 'natural' in the field again, but Many thanks.

Mine has now had two naked days!! It is quite chilly here, though I think it is the cold breeze that has the biggest effect. Have kept an eye out during evening stables for a while and haven't seen midges in over a week. Two days in if there were midges I would expect her to be showing itchyness, but none so far! Obv depends on the weather near you and if you are in much of a midgy area anyway. Fortunatly the breeze whips over our fields keeping the midges off a bit anyway.

How bad is the sweet itch? I haven't seen any midges round for quite a while now, its pretty cold! I took my mares rug off back in August as I wanted her to have a couple of months of letting her skin breathe before she's in rugs in winter. However hers is not severe, I just put Itch Stop on her mane and tail to stop her rubbing too much. You could put a lightweight rug on in this weather instead-it will stop her from being irritated by the flies on part of her body at least

Toffee has a neckie made of fly rug mesh and she has that on and off over the winter depending as she gets cold easily now so needs normal rug. She had it on and off until November last year so just playing it by ear to how itchy she is and what midges are about. She had to have it back on once the snow melted :( poor pony never really gets to be naked.

Thanks all, I think I'll be standing out tonight assessing the midge situation! Our field is near a brook, so it does tend to be midgier than some fields. She's a cob, so am going to try not to rug her this year, so she at least gets a few months rug free.
