I was going to have a friend out to do Bear's mane tomorrow, but I haven't got enough time as I have got so much on. I usually do it myself but I have left it so long it was wild lol!
Well I decided to do it myself tonight as we have the show on Sunday

Honestly- How does it look?

Oh dear.....................Looks in between to me...............too thick and long to plait. Too straight/hacked for a 'natural' look. What did you do it with?? Scissors??

I dont plait him, I'm going to tidy it up a bit tomorrow, I couldn't find my gloves so had to use my 3yr olds pink magic gloves lol! My fingers were killing, oh and I bloody bathed him 3 days ago so his mane is slippery lol!

Wash it and put some conditioner on it and it will look softer, dont pull/trim anymore and I think it will look ok, MM like

I like the natural look on this type. It will grow back

It always looked odd but soon grew out

Go & get a "Smart Comb"........make a 'sandwich' with the comb underneath the mane up at roots, & your hand on top of the mane. Draw the comb down to the end of the mane, keeping you hand over the top of it with an even pressure. That will thin the mane without chopping it. I did one of mine that hadn't been touched for about four years in less than 15mins like that. It looked good, & plaited perfectly.
Which show are you going to, & what classes are you doing?

I would pull and thin it more, and neaten his tail up to match. Leave his feathers alone though! You'll also need to trim any beard hair etc on his face. Then was and condition mane and tail, and wait for them both to grow back

I think it's a bit of an in-between length at the moment, but with a mane like that it would be cruel to take it all out at once. Give it aweek or so and then take it shorter, you have done a lovely job at getting it level - it doesn't look scissored at all, you can tell you've pulled it all out by hand!

What show classes does he do?

Looks like a M&M to me so needs it left loose and natural

If you are going to pull his mane short for plaiting you need to chop his tail and trim his heels, no need to pull tail if you plait it.

If you are leaving it loose them just put conditioner on it and wait for it to grow.

It is not that bad - grit your teeth and leave it to grow. I would neaten the end of his tail - just take a couple of inches off and have it straight - will match more and look better.

This is what I did to Chancer - took 20" off - went a bit mad but long term as done it a lot of good

To this - over 20"

The tail is bagged, hence why it has disappeared.

Rubbed in lots of megatek to grow it as fast as possible though the little bugger rubbed it and thinned out 6" length recently and four months later it looks very good - nearly doubled in length.

Why did you pull it? I think it looked nice before ..the natural look (on your showing pic) but its not a disaster though, so I wouldn't worry or panic too much.

I think it now looks like a typical in-between look, like your going from the tidy pulled/thinned look to growing it out natural and long.

You can either seriously thin it and fine the ends a bit and leave to grow long again or seriously thin it and pull it, so you get the original short neat desired look which is what you went for..?

Either way he's handsome buggar and hope you do well at your show.

I think he looks fine, don't know what all the fuss is about. I'd probably work on it a bit more pulling it to thin it and shorten a bit more over time but in the meantime it's fine.

Besides, you show locally for fun rather than super serious stuff right? So what does it matter anyway?!
