What 4x4 to tow trailer???? advice needed.

Hi,
Can anyone recommend what is the best 4x4 for towing a trailer. What is the most economical, as will have to be used for getting to work every day? Also don't have a very big budget. Also where is the spell checker

So you'll need something about the size of a 510 then which are 1000kg unladen. Add in say another 1200 kgs for the horses and another 200kgs for bits and pieces and you're looking at a total weight of around 2500kgs. You need to find something that can tow that capacity, will probably need to have 2.5 engine as a minimum, possibly a bit more. Cars of this size are not economical to run - we have a shogun sport & a 510 and it belts through fuel (even without the trailer) and can currently take approx £80 to fill it!
 
sorry to add,,,, my 4x4 was costing me 70 quid a week to fuel for work ect,,, so got rid of trailer and 4x4 bought a runaround and a lorry,, is proving cheaper already without anymore price hikes in the fuel department!!!!! theres no such thing as a cheap 4x4!!!!!
 
A manual diesel Discovery will give in the region of 30mpg if driven carefully, but not when towing. Round town it is nearer 27mpg. Scary with diesel well over £5 a gallon!
 
have a 510 Ifor, used to tow with a mitsubishi 2.8TD Lwb, was getting 25mpg so filling up every 3 days at a cost of £75.00. sold it and bought a normal car. Now tow with dads, nissan aventura double cab, engine been chipped and it does about 37mpg.
 
I hava a Vauxhall Monterey 3.2 petrol if you are interested

Used to use it towing to big Section D's no problem

I had a SW Pajero 2.8 TD, fantastic 4x4, very reliable, brilliant for towing, easy for reversing because of it being a SW, but boy did it sup juice.
I used to run to work in it everyday and oh my god it nearly bankrupt me, £70 a week doing 5 days a week running to work on a 15 mile route there and back, then just nipping 10 minutes to the yard on weekends as I called to my yard going and coming from work during the week.

So unless you've got loads of cash or only work a few miles away, your better of buying a good second hand 4x4 and another car as a run-around....speaking from experience here.

However smashing 4x4's if your looking for something on the cheaper end of the market, plus if you buy an import it will be immaculate!

Loved it, missed it and yes I'd have another if I could afford to run one!

I know I say this all the time but... what about getting a 4x4 that's been converted to run on LPG? It's half the price of petrol and you get a discount on your road tax plus you don't have to pay congestion charges. I have a 4 litre Jeep Cherokee and it costs me £24 to fill up and tows my Bateson with my two 16.2 boys with no problems. You can get them ready converted second hand which I recommend or you can have a new one (petrol only not diesel) converted and that costs about £1200-1500. I worked out that you'd recoup your money in about 18 months with the current cost of fuel. Plus the price of petrol is still going up alarmingly! I personally wouldn't get a horsebox unless you're doing lots of miles on a regular basis. The cost of plating and repairs just doesn't bear thinking about!
 
i couldn't afford a horsebox and a runaround so i've just bought a Toyota Hilux Surf 3.0TD - Jap import - imaculate, 13yrs old, but only 63k miles on the clock. There's plenty around at good prices. Was paying £60 every 10days to fill up my Clio. Reckon on about £70 a week for the 4x4 so not too much difference - will obviously be more once I start towing with it, but still cheaper than hiring a horsebox.
