I was out riding this morning, and as I passed a man in a white van, he wound the window down and went 'Oh my what a big fat horse' :O :)

Yes, Im quite aware my horse is overweight, I moved to my own field recently which hadnt been grazed which didnt help.
I have restricted her grazing and she now has a muzzle also, and Im riding her as much as I can!
Some people are so rude !

Had EXACTLY the same thing happen to me last summer. A man riding a lovely slim TB looked at Arran and said " How did he get so big"?. I was very tempted to say.. Cos he ate all the god dam pies you rude A***hole. I tried to be polite and explain that he has EMS diabetes and its not his fault nor mine, he eats zilch, hasnt seen grass in I dont know how long and is on a diet worthy of any -000 model.
Smile sweetly, ride on and dont forget to thank the nice man for his nice comments!!!
 
I wouldn't get too upset - some people don't realise making a comment about your horse is similar to insulting your child!

I was out once and passed a family. The dad said "that's a big horse" and the little girl said with disgust "looks like a cart horse". It was a struggle to keep my mouth shut!
 
When daughter was about 4/5 some kids of about 6/7 asked if the pony (a shetland) was a donkey to her disgust. Riding together even adults sometimes ask if her 11.1 is a foal or 'baby horse' she used to get quite offended that they thought she was mean enough to ride a foal till she understood they just didn't know!
 
A wile ago i had what i thought was a beautiful black TB and was riding him through our village when i small child pointed and shouted "look mummy its a horse, its like black beauty" I was quite chuffed til i heard the mother comment "no sweetie Black beauty was a proper horse- thats a little black pony"

Ummm, Sorry what???

I've had a couple of good comments while hacking out on my shire x cob like

"Where's ya plough!?" from some builders.

Some old fella stood in his drive said "bring that in here I'll clip them feathers off!" :eek: er no thanks!!

and one old lady stopped her car wound down the window and asked if we pulled boats, I said no but her ancestors probably have! :D bless.

Ive made a promise to myself to stop smiling and being polite to people that think its ok to randomly pass negative comment on my horses in the street, unasked, from now on they will be told to jog on, tbh.

I was asked the other week if Henry was a donkey! I wouldn't care, but exmoors have the smallest ears of any breed I know! I'm afraid I struggled to hide how offended I was. Have also been asked if he's a shetland many times (and a foal). There are some seriously mentally challenged people out there, stealing our oxygen!

I used to get the 'fat' comments, too. They didn't upset me so much, but it's all balanced out, as now I get asked how old he is and then they say, 'Wow! He looks fantastic!' :D

My response to rude comments these days is just to stare through them. Makes them very uncomfortable and saves my breath, too. Win-win!
 
I have had quite a few of the shire and cart comments but I don't think they are being rude, they just don't know the different breeds. I think it is quite funny and usually just explain that he is a cob.

Mostly I get positive comments. A lady cycling towards us the other day slowed down and said 'You have the most beautiful horse. You are so lucky.' I was dead chuffed.:D

When we were galloping on the downs we passed some scouts who shouted 'That looks awesome!'
 
In an attempt to get fit a few years ago i went jogging, and some blokes yelled at me "get your legs up chunky" i couldnt believe it, and yes they were all far fatter than me!!
 
I was leading in my 'pure bred,98% Crabbet,with bloodlines you can trace back to the desert' Arabian one day. He was jogging the end of the leadrope with his head and tail up, looking every inch his breeding......when some ankle biter on the yard said, "Is he a thoroughbred?"

after being really big when i was little and regularly being told ' u dont have a 6 pack......u've got 6 tyres!!' baring in mind i was like 11!! and having to leave brownies cause i was bullied....its at someones own risk to say a weight related comment to my poppy!!

my normal response is a rather quick flick of the middle finger and a swift trot off :D
 
I was riding a 14.2 grey roan pony I help to reschool around the lanes last week, a couple with a baby stopped me to ask if he was a race horse! I couldn't help but giggle!
