What a brilliant place

Stella is taking a trip to Florida for Thanksgiving, and I thought I'd see what walks etc. the area has to offer. Beside the vast array of dog-friendly beaches, I came across Dog Wood Park. Doesn't it look great? Now I know where Stella and Prince the Pug will be spending all of their days while on vacation

Whilst they would both like to go to cause havoc in so many different ways

I have also reminded them just how lucky they are to live in their own dog play park called a farm!!!

Don't forget Stellas sunblock and shades!! I bet you'll have a fab time!!

Prose, may I ask, in these dog parks are all the dogs sociable with each other or do arguments/fights occur? Are certain types of dogs prohibited?

Just something I have always wondered. I used to have ex-racing greyhounds, and although I never took them out unmuzzled, the temptation for them to chase other dogs, especially small ones would be just too much for them to cope with, I could never have risked taking them to a dog park.

Good question, I am always impressed at how cordial relations seem to be in the dog parks in NY!

I think a lot of dogs, once free of the tension they feel from us down the lead or free from the need to protect us while attached to us, get on the very best.

However I would not be willing to risk it and end up with B taking a chunk out of someone else's pet, so he can only really play with dogs he has met before, is used to and likes, thankfully, these are becoming more and more!

Prince the pug is another of Stella's rellies.

For the most part, dog runs are harmonious places. Stella has mixed with literally thousands of dogs in her lifetime, and we've only had a couple of minor skirmishes--a Bulldog sitting on her, a scrap with another Boston terrier, and a Lab mix that kept trying to hump her and sent her mad. We always proceed with caution. If the run is full of too many amped-up, large dogs, we won't go in, or we'll stick to the 25lb and under section.

There are no breed restrictions in NYC dog runs. You'll see everything from teacup chihuahuas to Neopolitan Mastiffs.

Most dog runs have a committee, and if a dog is a consistent offender--a bully with other dogs, out of control humping, barking in a menacing way at people--it'll be barred from using the run. To be honest, it's a matter of common sense. A friend of mine has a Samoyed that's aggressive toward large dogs (he's smitten with Stella, obviously

) and he's never stepped inside a dog run.

We must be very lucky, but our local park is very social like this for the dogs. They pretty much all go off their leads and hoon around together

Popple goes every morning and has LOADS of friends there that she plays with.

We know them all by name, and she is rather well known herself

Definitely. While we love going to the ordinary parks, too--Prospect Park in Brooklyn is 500 acres, and probably has 500 dogs all playing together on Sat and Sun mornings--there is a certain advantage to a dog park's lack of bikes, roads, skateboards, kids etc. etc.

If the concept works in litigious-happy America, then it would definitely work in the UK.
