Today was the senior novice dressage qualifiers for the riding club. The Juniors were yesterday and there were only 4 teams entered and our guys won and are now off to Hartpury (Yipee)

My test time today was after 4 so I had lots of time to wash his legs (he's out 24/7) wash his tail, and get him plaited. Loaded well and off we went. He travelled like a dream and was good as gold. Got to the venue a bit early and had some help so was ready a bit early. Warmed up too soon but he went fairly well.

Went into the test and the arena wasn't very nice; must have been 23 by 40 as there was just enough room to get round one side of the boards and flowers

Our test was ok. He was a bit against me for some of it and was on the forehand in most of the canter work but to be fair he's only just clicked about staying in an outline in canter so that's something for us to work on. Had 2 7s and the rest was all 6s and 5s so was quite disappointed to come out with 56.1%

Our chef de quip thought it looked nice and should have been mid 60s

Comments were all fair and useful for us to work on

So we got back and I gave him a drink and a small feed and 2 minutes later he started to heave

I first thought it might be hiccups but the wretching was a bit violent. Thought it might be choke or colic so started to panic
frown.gif
Tried to get his head up and clear the blockage but it was too painful for him so walked him about. Rang my poor friend in a panic not sure what to do immediatly and was told to ring the vet but that it sounded more like choke than colic. He started to heave gunk out his mouth and nostrils which confirmed it was choke. Vet came half hour later and gave him muscle relaxant and sedative.
Poor thing was very distressed at the stuff he was snorting out
frown.gif

I put down a straw bed which he promptly decided to try and eat when he perked up but then realised he couldn't so was a bit peeved. Vet agreed he should just have rubber mats down and nothing else.
He's in for the night now and i'll go and check him in a bit. I don't expect him to be very happy as he is not a stabled horse and would much rather be out

Sarah and Perry had a brilliant day but I'll let her post about it!

Sorry he is poorly ,Rafi has had choke before and scared us to death ,we make his feed very wet now.He was fine afterwards though.
Our RC qualifier is next week so poor Rafi has to do his bit again.
Pic looks lovely

Awwww poor Mr. D- Shadow used to get choke loads! I'm sure he will be totally ok- just watch him eat over the next couple of days as he will be slightly sore/rough in his throat. That pic looks lovely (was it raining?)

No, it wasn't raining thankfully, just poor camera so pics look rubbish
frown.gif

Poor thing was meant to have dentist tomorrow so doubt he'l be able to now
frown.gif

Poor Darcy, Im glad he is ok for now, Im sure he will survive staying in for the night. (where did you put all the junk from your stable!?!

Pic looks good! dont panic about the score hun! You'll get there! At least you know what was wrong with the test, we will just have to make sure you are aware of todays mistakes before you go into your next test so you can get the score you deserve!

Poor thing is still not any better so have nipped home to fill some hot water bottles and will be spending the night on the yard
frown.gif
Vet didn't think she should come and tube him tonight as the relaxants will work for most of the night but she said i need to check him through the night
frown.gif

Aww poor Darcy!! Hugs to you both!!! I've only experienced choke with a foal - that a foum member now knows as a rising 4yo, lol. It's very alarming! Hope he's feeling better soon!!

Thanks all.
He's feeling pretty miserable this morning.
I checked him through the night and he was quite settled/quiet but still had dribble coming out his nose and mouth and was in pain swallowing etc.
Vet came out this morning and tubed him with a small tube and that shifted it further along and also aspirated some of it back out. He's had another long pain killer and relaxant. He's pretty revulsed by all the ick he's snotting up
crazy.gif
but nice and chilled out now
smile.gif

Got to check him in another couple of hours and then phone vet to discuss.
smile.gif

This is Wales - you've seen how we work here!
smirk.gif
(no offence to the rest of Wales but this bit of it is a bit backwards!)
She said something about the specialists recommending 12 hours wait to see if the drugs work first. Said something about not wanting to tube unless it was really necessary incase of scarring and it might increase the chance of a recurrance
confused.gif

Lovely pics.....he just reminds me of a bigger version of my first pony!
smile.gif

Sorry to hear of the choke, it has to be one of the scariest things to witness with a horse and you feel so helpless.
frown.gif

Hope he's feeling much better now.
smile.gif

Thank you
smile.gif

Very scarey indeed
frown.gif
The noises he was making made it sound very painful for him and not nice to see him so distressed.
Just been and checked him again and it looked like he had tried to drink but still throwing out saliva through nostrils and mouth.
He's quiet enough and when i went up now he was desperately trying to drink. Managed a few glugs and then snorted out his nose and brought up some of the food that caused the choke so I was sort of pleased at that, at least it's moved.
I will go and check again in a couple of hours and ring the vet as requested.
smile.gif

Think he still needs you guys' vibes though please
