Today half of our farm steading burnt down. My horse has his stable in it and the bull has a pen there too, as well as our 4 young heifers.

All the animals were inside at the time. Luckily my father in law (70 years old) managed to let them all out. I was at work thankfully as I think I would have been hysterical.

My horse currently owes his life to father in law. Apparently the smoke was so think he couldnt see a thing and the horse just would not leave the stable. As far as I gather he pulled him out by pulling on his rug and his mane.

So thankfully all animals and humans are ok. I now have no stable and my fully clipped horse is outside tonight in the only rugs that I have left. (Heavy stable rug and a medium turnout and hood. We are meant to have temperatures of -20 tonight!

Have lost most of my rugs, grooming equipment, mucking out stuff, buckets, haynets and my clippers and various boots etc. But at the end of they day all lives are intact.

Nightmare.

Oh My Goodness - what a nightmare. Thank goodness all the animals and humans are safe.

Don't panic about your horse, I'm sure after his terrible experience he would rather be a bit chilly but able to move around than penned in. In extremis an old blanket or duvet would add another layer.

Wishing you the best of luck in sourcing new rugs tomorrow and in getting a swift settlement from the insurance.

My goodness how awful for you all. So glad that no one, and no animals were hurt.

Huge ((hug)) for you all. xx

Horsey will be fine, don't worry, as long as he's wrapped up well and plenty to eat he'll be perfectly happy I'm sure. xx

Well done father in law. Nasty shock! glad everyone is safe.

What a nightmare for you all. But as you say at least everyone is ok. Hate to think of what could have happened. Can replace equipment and all that....

I have probably got some haynets and boots etc if you want anything posted to you?

Hope your father in law is ok.

oh god, how awful!
is there no where you can stable your horse short term?
if you have horsey friends maybe you could ask to borrow rugs etc?
glad all your animals are ok though!

Oh dear god how awful, you poor thing. I'm so glad everyone is ok. I'd imagine that being in scotland with all the snow you can't exactly pop to the tack shop at the mo either. I'm sure your boy will be ok with 2 rugs on, they're quite tough when they have to be. Hope you get it sorted as quickly as possible.

what rug size is your horse? what else do you desperately need?

thank god they got out safely. well done to your father in law!

They think it is an electrical fault that started it. Not really totally sure. Its an old steading so maybe the wiring, or maybe mice chewing through something.

Thank god it was through the day - it was the bull who raised the alarm by roaring (very out of character). If it had been at night it would have been a very different story I think.

Thank you for all the kind offers, think I have rugs sorted and I will be on the case of alternative stabling tomorrow. It was too short notice by this afternoon and trying to organise everything was a nightmare.

Still have to find a home for a bull and 4 heifers! They are outside tonight too!

how dreadful, what a wonderful man your father in law is i hope he's ok, mustve been terrifying for him, your horse is safe and im sure he'll be fine tonight, are you insured? We'll have to have a whip round if your not, sending hugs xxxx

That's put my day into perspective. Glad all survived, father in law did a grand job and I hope you can recoup some of the items lost in the fire and the damage to the building via your insurance.

So sorry to hear this, hope you manage to sort things out without too much hassle.

Thanks to your superd father in law bless him, the most important are safe.

xxx

Glad all the animals got out safely and nobody was injured .What a terrible experience hope everthing gets sorted quickly for you .

Poor you - cant you build em some shelter out of straw bales and tarpauling - in know it wont be that good but a wind break and something to keep the snow of there backs may help.

Well done to dad in law.....

crikey, your father-in-law is an absolute HERO, it must take tremendous courage to go into a smoke-filled building like that, very dangerous. thank God the bull raised the alarm - smart bull!
i'm sure you lad will survive 1 night on the tiles... hope you get rugs etc sorted tomorrow, good luck with temporary stabling etc etc.

Thank you all for your kind words and suggestions. Tomorrow is another day and it will hopefully be looking up by then.

I think I may move my horse temporarily to a local livery yard - only problem with that is the roads are not that great at the moment for moving a horse.
