Well after the really crap day last week when I found out Pidge was diagnosed with Hock Spavin things have improved since then (touch wood!)
Walked him for 30 mins friday in the school. Hacked for 30 mins sat and sunday. walked him for 30 mins monday in the school and did 3 seperate circuits in trot. ridden again tonight in the school and did a lot more in trot. and touch wood he appears sound (ok so he is still on bute but its a start

) he was a bit stiff tonigh to start with but was in last night as gradually increasing the time out in the field and I kept him in today as it was supposed to thunder and him and Sunny fight if it thunders so thought I'd err on the cautious side and keep him in. Will see if I can get sis to take a video of me trotting him so that you can see what you think. Just wanted to post a happy post for a change

thanks guys, I feel much more relaxed about it now after a very stressy week last week

however it did take me till mon night to relax when sat on Pidge as I could feel my bum all tense like ooh I'm gonna hurt him or he's gonna feel lame. Was very nervous about trotting yesterday as last time he bum was all over the place when he went lame initially but it was ok. So after some advice please how much longer do I continue to walk and trot for? have only just started doing some trotting and only on a surface. Pidge was well up for a canter tonight but I had to resist the temptation to let him

Do I just slowly increase the time ridden and increase the trot accordingly? When do I introduce canter? never done this sort of thing before.

Well done... it took me ages to feel comfortable about riding merlin after his arthritis diagnosis.... but you get there in the end... at least you know once his hocks fuse he should be out of discomfort!!!

Let me know if there was anything you wanted to know about the IRAP therapy :-)

thanks both

been trying ever since you sent me one, but no good. Didn't want to ring as get in quite late with Pidge not out 24/7 yet.

wow, so glad he's going well. Hope everything works out. So nice to read a post like that. Your horse looks very nice Pidge - I love chestnuts as well! Two of my horses are chestnuts.

Hi Pidge, I would refer to the vet for an exercise routine. My limited knowledge tells me it is good to keep them moving but very important not to overdo it. Spavins can take a long time to settle (in some cases up to a couple of years!) and with the bute masking the pain, you may think Pidge can cope with more than he actually can. The bute will help the inflammation but will not settle the spavin any quicker and if you work him too hard it could set you back. I would keep the exercise regular but gentle and that will give you the best chance of the hock calming down asap.

thanks everyone

Vet just said to gradually increase the work and duration over the next couple of weeks. So do I increase slightly or go by how Pidge is feeling?
