All we wanted to do was have a nice hack. We just decided to go round some quiet roads in a big circle then back up to the field.

So my friend and me was having a nice walk up the road when a BMW driver came speeding down the road, Maisie twitched and the driver swerved in as if he was "pretending" to hit us so Maisie spoked and by the time I looked around to see his number plate he was gone as he was so fast! Poor Maisie ..

So carried on walking up the road when another BMW driver and more cars were coming towards us, so we just kept walking until a man and his dog came to there gate .. Dog jumped up barking at Maisie .. Maisie shoots off across the road .. Me hanging on nearly falling off into the BMW car and the BMW driver and the other cars slam on there emergency breaks before I ended up on top of there bonnet. Maisie couldnt put her back hind down so jumped off and looked at it all and rung the field owner, Maisie had a couple of cuts on her right front leg and has quite a few cuts on her hinds.

Maisie managed to put some weight onto her leg whilst we walked back up to the lane where we met our field owner and her son to come check Maisies legs over. Field owners son then walked back with us up to the field. Maisie was a lot better walking on the road and wasnt as lame. By the time we got back to the field Maisie was putting all her weight in the back hind and was walking a lot better. Only a little bit of heat coming from her leg, so we just hosed her leg down and cleaned her cuts up and then she was fine when we put her back in the field. She even chased me across the field so was obviously feeling a lot better!

I just don't see how people think its okay to drive so fast towards horses. Its horrible. I tried to get the first guys number plate who tried to swerve into us but by the time I looked he was already down the road.

Oh well .. Lets hope for a better ride next time aye!!

Wow - that's awful - Please don't tar all BMW drivers with the same brush - my OH and I have one and we never drive like that.

Anyway. I hope poor Maisie will be ok and not too spooked by her experience. Was the driver that you fell off onto ok about it all? Hope you're ok too - it takes some getting over when you have a scare like this.

Even though you don't have the 1st BMW driver's reg no you could still report the incident to the police. Do you know the colour of the car? Is it likely they're local? Perhaps you might see them again?

Poor you and Maisie. I really feel for you. I think its about time the police started clamping down on these road hogs and do something about it. I often feel at risk when out on my young Anglo Arab Reo who is very nervous in traffic and people like you describe don't help. Even on country lanes you get idiots doing 60 mph.

Im not saying anything about the BMW's .. The first car was an old horrible one, but the mans BMW that I nearly fell into was very nice .. and looked VERY expensive (oops) thats all.

I think the first one was a local one so if I see it again I shall deffo report it.
I think next time we go up there ill get someone to go first, as I don't want to avoid that road after the accident, I want her to get used to it.

Its horrible though why would someone do it?

Maisie will be fine, field owner and me will trot her up on hard ground again in the morning x

how awful...i agree its disgusting but doesn't suprise me. i used to do lots of riding on the roads...until i got run over by a stupid cow trying to squeeze through a tiny gap and horse spooked and fell on her bonnet. i'm now really scared of riding on the roads- even quiet little lanes like the one from my yard- every time a car comes remotely near i get dead panicky and have to stop horse- i get really worried that he'll spook just as they come flying past... hence why i never ride on the main road anymore.... :(

So glad that you are both in one piece "D". Did Maisie come into contact with the vehicle?

Suggest you look around for CCTV coverage - you never know that this BMW may be on video somewhere (up the road) and may be able to link times and locations! Could you recognise the driver again and definitely report this to the Police on the non-emergency number; you don't know but someone else may have reported his driving skills towards horses before! Could he be linked to the apple problem!!!!

You will have to do some very loud doggie barking training with Maisie! May be worth getting one of those ear muff frindge for her - I have found them useful to deafen the noise a bit.

Maisie is great with dogs, it was this one that just caught us both off guard. Maisie didnt come into contact with any cars, luckily as I think if the second BMW didnt stop then it could have been quite nasty. This guy stopped and waited until it was all okay which was good of him.

xx

I think you should report this to the police; I used to work for the constabulary as a civilian and if my memory serves me right (it was a long time ago!) there is a responsibility for motorists to report to the police if they have an accident like this anyway. So the driver SHOULD report that you fell onto the bonnet of his vehicle. Perhaps there will be a dent in the paintwork or something, and if you report it to the police, then they can ask around motor repairers and alert them to a BMW owner coming in for damage repair for this, and then they'll find out the driver: there's ways and means!

But I definitely think you should report it: and there is another reason for doing so, coz put simply if this guy is for instance driving a company car and there's damage to it, or even doesn't like the repair bill he might have, then he might try to blame YOU for it!!! and then you might be held liable. Do you see what I mean?

I'd play safe and report it to the police anyway, just to be sure. It also might pay you to go to your doctor and get checked over; coz if there's just a little bruise or even a slight cut, you can get it recorded as an "injury" accident (and give the police more incentive to find the culprit). But the driver should really have reported this himself, just to cover himself anyway.

Hope you are ok.. some drivers are a nightmare! I always make a huge effort to thank people who slow down and make an effort to be careful. Hope you are ok :) x

Yeah I understand what you mean, but also Maisie or me didnt come into contact with the cars in question. I nearly fell off onto the 2nd BMW's car, but I didnt as he stoped in time and I managed to jump off quickly. Im not hurt, its only Maisie that has some cuts on her legs as she got her hind legs muddled up when she was skipping/jumping to the other side of road. There was no damage to any cars as we didnt hit them.

God I'm fuming for you!!! How dare that horrible little man behave in that manner? Please do report it to the Police even though you think it's not serious, if you report the 1st driver now with the information you have and then find out who he is they can take more action. Please don't let him get away with that behaviour, next time the horse or rider might not get away unhurt.

Bless glad your both o.k, It's always away when you wanna short ride or on a time limit. Some people are total ***** glad massie is o.k bless her x

Some people really are complete *****!! I think they forget horses have been on the road ALOT longer than cars have! It really annoys me.... I'm glad you are ok but you may find Maisie is nervous now :( My boy is absolutley petrified of lorries so when I had him stabled where I had no choice but to hack on the roads the amount of abuse me and my friend got for riding two a breast was ridiculous! People hanging out of the window screaming at us... deliverably getting about an inch from the back of the horses! I think alot of people need to read the highway code and realise it is LEGAL to ride to abreast and for horses to be on the road and that car drivers do not own the road

Report the incident to the local police station and ask for the Incident/Crime number.
Then if the same driver does this again to you or another rider there will be more ammunition to prosecute him and get a conviction.

"D" you remember my post a good few months back?!

FOR THE ATTENTION OF ALL SUSSEX HORSE RIDERS!
