what a nightmare today

Digby was really naughty with the farrier today and i really dont know why.
The only thing is i had left him in as the vet decided to turn up earlier to give him is booster and i didnt want to turn him out and get covered in wet mud for the farrier. Very unusally our farrier was late so i ended up turning him out, then they turned up, typical!!

As soon as they went up to him he didnt want to know and went all stiff and wouldnt even let them take him off.
Now last time they had a job picking them up but he wasnt naughty just stubborn and stood quietly.
I have practised since then icking his feet up and hes got far better and once he had his back done it was a major improvement. so thought he was going to be great today.

They ended up having to twitch him and managed to get his fronts donw then gave him a break.

tried to do his backs without the twitch and he was fine getting them off but then they had to put the twitch back on.

Farriers where brilliant and never got angry with him, he just looked genuinly worried and his legs where a bit shaky.

I just cant understand it as last time he was fine really.

any ideas?
 
Seems odd, don't suppose he had a bit of a reaction to the jab your vet gave him? Just wondered with his legs being shaky?

well we did wonder, and our farrier said he knew of one horse that was naughty after a jab but one which was jabbed in the shoulder so did not want to pick up his feet.

The jab seemed not to affect him at all, and he had to wait a good 3/4of an hour between the jab and the farrier. He wasnt shaky until they had one of his legs up and the other one would shake about a bit then he would hop off and try and kick out.
With the twitch he was fine and when they were done he stood there as good as gold.

I guess all i can do is see how he is next time when hes been turned out and had nothing esle done to him.

Seemed very strange

Maybe just a one off then. Yes, I know what you mean about farriers. I bought a horse yesterday that is lame with a foot abscess (can return it if it doesnt come sound!) and I text my farrier on the way back with him in the trailer to ask him to come and take a look - he was at my house before us! What a star. He always turns up when he says and squeezes us in on the same day usually if a shoe needs replacing or one has a problem. We are lucky to have good ones as there as so many stories about bad ones.
Hope Digby is a good boy next time for him

J was perfect the first time, then a pain in the bum the next time, he took both me and farrier completely by surprise. Still don't know why he was so good the first time, but he is now fine again after a lot of patience and a very good farrier. Think it was the stubborn Irish streak kicking in, he still occasionally has a moment but nothing like before, hopefully he is growing up a bit. Hope Digby is better behaved next time
 
I think his jab may have had something to do with it... Han is always really sore afterwards

I would wait and see what he is like next time, but in the meantime I wouldn't worry too much and keep on practising getting his feet up, stretched legs etc etc.
 
Had he been shod before you got him. A youngster I had years ago was perfect the first time shod but awful the 2nd. Farrier said it was because he knew what was happening the second time. Have to admit was okay after that, I just kept practising.

thing is he has been so perfect picking up his feet after the first time where he was so awkward, i just never expected it.

mind you, they all have their flaws

oh yes as far as i know, he was shod when i got him and he is 6 and has done some hunting in ireland so would have thought so.

Farrier said hes never known a horse to go like he did
 
Maybe it was just psychological - being shod on top of being jabbed with a needle - too many strangers poking and prodding (in his eyes?) Both my horses would probably have found it too much as babies - just a thought...
 
maybe, but he didnt even notice his jab to be honest , it was just quick and done within about 2 seconds :s
i shall just have to wait and see next time
