Just reading the Portsmouth News to find this comment in the letters section:

'I have a little dog and all my family are meticulous when we take him out, and make sure any messes are cleaned up. Why then, is it acceptable for horse riders to let their animals mess, without clearing it up? At the end of my road, as I write this, there is horse mess on the pavement. I just hope that nobody accidentally steps in it and then treads it onto their carpet....
This is disgusting, and the owners should be ashamed of themselves'.
Wendy, Lovedean.

Apart from this woman's poor grasp of punctuation, this article has made me seeth! What a stupid idiot! I agree the poo shouldn't have been on the pavement but does she want us to carry poo pickers whilst riding?

I know how crazy, round our way the locals love it espically as half of them are retired they get their shovels pick it up and put in on their gardens. Not only that horse muck isnt dangerous, dog mess can cause u to go blind. Well thats what we used to be told.

we aren't allowed on pavements now anyways thought that was new law? and what do they expect us to do carry a bucket and spade? i can mount my boy (16.3hh) if i get off but i know few people who once there on stay there as they cant get back on without leg up! this is stupid it will be farmers having to pick up cow pat/sheep sh*t next when they move them between fields why doesn't she pick it up her self for her roses!

yes and there are obviously multiple reasons why dog mess needs to be cleared more than horse mess.

BUT noone should be leaving a pile of horse crap on the pavement, assuming this is proper 'pavement' as such. If mine did that (though don't think have ever needed to be on a pavement - assuming it was poss small child) I would get off and either kick it into the verge or the gutter not expect people to have to walk over and round it.

I think she has a good point actually, horses shouldn't be on the pavement & I think leaving crap on the pavement is pretty bad, I don't like having to step around poo when I'm walking along a pavement.
On the road, fields etc is a different matter.

I think we should be riding out with a dustbin strapped accross our shoulders weilding a poo-picker like a joust.....

.......round our way, if a horse poos on the road theres usually a fight for it for the gardens

Shouldn't be on the pavement though, I agree with that.

Dog poo really gets my goat though...we are the last house before fields , with a lampost by the drive entance......it seems to be a dog toilet......I shouted at the last poor unfortunate whose dog took a dump there while I happened to be in the driveway that I would bring my 2 big rotties around to poo in their driveway if they did it again.

Where I do agress that it's a bit OTT I do believe that some horse ownders/riders do make a rod for their own backs. I hate dog poo everywhere but I can understand why this woman is angry, for her it must feel like one rule for one and another for everyone else.

There's too many people out there who think it's ok to ride wherever they feel like, to be on the road without proper care and attention which not only compromises the safety of themselves but other road users. My own pet hate is riders that do not thank drivers for passing wide and slow like we all want. It doesn't exactly create a good impression and I sometime wonder if drivers will think "sod it" the next time they pass.

Sorry grump over now, I go back to hiding under my stone

Tukana unfortunatly sometimes a pavement may have to be used for various reasons.

What a stupid comment to make (woman in the paper) I would love to get her on a horse (a big one too!) and make her carry a bucket and spade along, get off clear it off and try get back on from the floor with a heavy bucket of poo!

The only times I have seen a horse on the pavement the rider hasn't been a position to get off - horse looks rather unsettled/about to do something interesting. Getting off is not really an option at that point!

Wimbles
Don't get me started on riders who don't thank car drivers who slow down!
I was on my way to work once & passed somebody on a horse who was talking on a mobile. I slowed right down, gave her a wide berth & she totally ignored me, I stopped my car & had a go at her, something along the lines of "horse riders have a reputation of being rude & stuck up - it's because of people like YOU!"
I felt a lot better & I'd do it again.

I have to ride on the pavement sometimes as there is too much traffic and roadworks to ride on the road. Plus, I live in chav-town, I mean South Wigston so you get the boy racers and their moped mates blasting around on the roads. Then if you ride on the road, you get the car drivers shouting at you through the window saying you shouldn't be on the road!

Your damned if you do, and damned if you don't

My horses regularly crap on the road and within a day it has been dispersed no damage done........although residents still moan about it.

It is bad that it is on the pavement I guess. However, I have had to jump up on to the pavement several times on Monty since the road we ride down is double-parked and there isn't enough space to get past a horse. I always try and trot through that section or pull in to let people pass but you always get the odd knob head who tries to creep past.

In this situation, I usually try and squeeze 17hh of Monty between cars and up on to the pavement to prevent an accident......and if he poos, he poos! (and he usually does since he is so upset and wound up from numpties ramming up his backside and revving their engines!).

Don't people take their outdoor shoes off before they walk on carpets?!

I read the other day that 90% of shoes have traces of dog muck on them.

I can't see anyone not noticing they have stood on horse poo and trailing it through their carpets.

I think fair point about it being on the pavement though.
The estate we have our horses on has big posh weddings every weekend in summer, there are certain roads that if our horses do a poo, we will go back later in the car and move it to the side. It is just about having respect for your surroundings and the people who own the place. I wouldn't worry on the public roads though.

As a dog owner who has always cleared up after my dogs, I actually see the point of the letter writer. there should NOT be horse poo on the pavement and, as a horse owner, it would annoy me too. There is rarely a good reason for a horse to be on the pavement, and if a horse does have to tread on the pavement, any horse poo he/she leaves should be moved into the ditch.

I live and work in Portsmouth and I love it. If you dont like it can't you move?

The letter writer is clearly as offended with horse poo as dog poo so fair point in her letter, to her and many it is disgusting. To me and many there is clearly a big difference in one from the other but to some people there is no difference. Looking forward to seeing OP reply on the letters page or please don't leave us in suspense, can you tell us what you wrote?
