Hey - so last w/end I went with 2 friends to a Trail Ride just outside Vancouver. We went western trail riding which was fun - I had an interesting introduction to my horse (it reared up from it's tie up, and back flipped onto the floor - I was then asked to mount said horse!?!).... Welcome to Dude Ranching...

Anyway, after about 1.5 hours into our ride, we came across another bunch of horses, and I just nearly fell off, not because I was on this nutter dude horse that did everything sideways, but because there was a lady riding her horse with a child in a backpack thing attached to her. Now I didnt wear a hat, so can't speak for any other adult, but this person had her child (about a year - 15 mths old) on her back without a hat too...????

It was wild country we were trekking in, bears, cougars, snakes etc would be the norm and we also rode on tarmac'd roads too....

I can't say I've seen anything so foolish before in my life....

It's not legal to wear hats on horses, although it is on a bike (??), but even the most sensible person would think it was the height of stupidity to take a baby out on their back????

So - it was fun to be out riding again, however, I can't say it was anything like riding my own horses - miss that.... But it was a lovely day out...

Do I top the craziest thing seen out hacking ?????

Hindsight is a wonderful thing! Why is it on holidays, we do things we would never dream of at home? Example (UK) - full car seat, all the straps and safety equipt possible. Switch to caribbean landscape - mini moke,no seat, no roof, no sides, very happy toddler! Then there was the riding in greece......two year old TII badgering for two whole weeks to ride horses in olive grove behind house, ended up sharing two hour hack, being swapped between father's pommel and mine, along the beach etc, not a hat between the three of us. No cougars, though! Still not ideal, still totally irresponsible, but it was huge fun. Boy, are we paying for it now - should have given her a bucket and spade!
