Am looking at getting a pony to share with my small children. Just wondering how small I can get away with. I am 5ft4 and 50kilos. Also what kind of age? So far I am viewing 4 ponies on Thursday:

1 Fjord, 150cm and 15 years old. Been there done that, competed by 9 year old child and ridden by the boys mother who learnt to ride 6 years ago and has taken her out on fun rides and hacked out alone with no probs. Sounds wonderful, although concerned that 15 may be to old??

14 year old school pony 138 cms. Don't know much else yet on this one.

5 year old half arab pony, being used as a school pony for children apparently!! 140cm

6 year old connermara 147 cm.

Any thoughts?????

For a bit of background, selling a competition horse who I have had from 5 years old to 8 years old. He was very spooky and big so no good as a lead rein poney for my children. And was an extremely strong horse when jumping. Just want to enjoy myself now and let my kids get some enjoyment from it to.

You don't say how old your children are, but you mention lead rein in your last para.

i would say the 150cm is far too big for the kids. Ditto the 147cm.

Look at the 138 and the half arab.

You should be able to get away with a 13hh pony. your kids will have fun and you are small enough to ride it too. i spent a couple of years riding my kids 13.2 pony and I am a bit taller than you and a bit heavier.

Oops sorry, they are very small 6 and 7.

Depends on the build of the pony - I am the same height and was too tall for my 13.1 welsh c:

I would go for one of the first two, unless your kids are going to be on the LR long enough for the 5 and 6 year olds to grow out of the 'stroppy teenager' phase - especially the PBA!

We have a 13.2 hh Arab cross which is currently a bit big/forward going for my younger son (9 years) but he does ride him if our neighbour's son is riding our sec A. I can ride the 13.2 (I'm just 9 stone and 5'4") and my 15 year old son has only just got too heavy/big for him - looked a bit tall on him for a while, but could still do flat work on him fine. I would definitely go for a pony in their teens as a family allrounder - our two are 20 and 19 and both have plenty of life left.

Hope that helps! Good luck. :)

I'd have a look at them all, can't do any harm. I'd go for 13.2 depending on build, height doesn't matter on the lead rein but you need something they can ride easily off too. Temperament is more important than age or height really.

Its so tricky, I forgot how hard it is to decide when getting a horse/pony. I am thinking possibly older, as really want to be able to take them out on hacks on the lead rein so don't want anything silly. Plus don't really want the pressure I have had for the last 3 years to ride every spare minute I have and not even enjoyable riding but proper training!! Hope I don't sound to lazy when I say that!! Just want some fun now, no comps, nothing too serious, just good old reliable fun!!

Quite like the sound of the 5 year old as well though, but am worried about the 7 year phase of naughtiness!! And part arab, thinking possibly quite spooky!

Our arab x is not at all spooky. He is however forward going, but does not buck, spin, bolt, or spook at anything. He has been the perfect confidence giver to my older son who was dumped on numerous occasions by our sec A. However, I personally would only be looking at anything over around 8 for young children - I know there are exceptions, but that is what I would do/have done.

We've a 13.2 arab x and he is one of the the least spooky ponies I know. He's 22 this year but still capable of winning a few races at mounted games or turning his hand at jumping. He's also excellent with kids of all ages and you can put any non rider of a child on there and know he is safe.
