I'm probably worrying unnecessarily.... but I need someone to put my mind at rest.

My filly was born March 07, I bought her Aug 08 aged 17 months, she's now 20 months.
When I got her she was hugely bloated and had a real pot-belly. She changed shape drastically with some proper attention but has always had a "bit" of a belly, which I put down to being a yearling and having a bad start to this year (bought in poor condition).
However, for the last few weeks, everytime I take her rug off, my eyes are drawn to her stomach and I keep thinking she looks pregnant. I think her belly has changed shape recently, I cut her food down as she was getting a little tubby (beginnings of a cresty neck) and she's lost a bit of that extra, but I really am beginning to worry about her shape.

The fact that in the 3 months I've had her she's had several raging seasons also points to her not being pregnant, but she did move to a new yard and I know of mares that still show whilst in-foal.
She's a very hormonal mare, sweet and affectionate some days and a nasty cow on other days, again I put down to the fact her hormones are all over the place with her seasons.

She came from a large stud who couldn't put a figure on the actual number of horses they had (oh, the joys of miniature horses

) but had 17 "active" stallions running with who knows how many mares..... plus however many of previous years ungelded colts must have been on the farm (nobody seems to geld minis) . I haven't spoken to the stud yet to ask if there's any chance she could have been served, but I don't know if they'd honestly be able to say either way for definite.

The thing that's worrying me is I had this a few years ago that I was absolutely convinced for months that a cob mare in full-time work on my yard was pregnant but no-one agreed or believed me. When her stomach dropped suddenly her owner finally had her scanned....... and she was due within weeks.

So now I've made myself paranoid, what I'm after is for someone to categorically tell me my yearling filly can't be pregnant........ please?

Sorry - but I'm afraid she could be! Fillies nrmally come into season between 11 and 15 months - and young fillies can be highly fertile. The fact she has been seen 'showing' in season as you rightly say is not 'proof' she is not in foal.

The big belly when you got her was probably due to worms/immaturity or whatever - a change in belly shape now might just be she is maturing and getting a bit porky BUT ....

I would speak to your vet - I don't know much about miniatures but she would be at least 3 months pregnant - possibly more. I know internal scanning is not practical in a small mini - but external scanning MIGHT be at this stage.

Otherwise a 'wee test' would be sensible.

BUT, I wouldn't worry too much. Although she's very young, from cases I have heard of this is not the automatic disaster people tend to fear. Your vet could advise re options to terminate the pregnancy if that's what you wish to do - otherwise, with careful attention to diet to ensure she can still grow properly without the foal getting too big - she should be fine.

You need to speak to your vet TBH. We bought a 2yo NF who because of the feeding & care carried her foal & produced a nice healthy filly. Our vet said that if she had remained in the New Forest, she may well have lost it because nature would ensure her well being before the foetus

It is possible.

My OH built a fence for a lady who purchased a little Appaloosa filly from a gypsy, because she felt sorry for her. She was a yearling, and also had a pot belly, but the lady just put it down to bad nutrition in her early months. However, four months after she got her, the filly gave birth in the field to a still born foal

I knew of filly and colt foals who were weaned together and left together until they were 9 months old. The filly ended up having a foal, it was to late to do anything when they actually discovered she was in foal. In that case everything worked out ok, the resulting foal and its mother grew up and matured correctly.

I would def get your vet to check but just to put your mind at some kind of ease till he does, minis do get bloated very easily as they only have a small stomach. Inky my 2.5 year old went through ( and still is at the moment ) a bloaty stage when he was the same age as your filly.

what is she fed on and how much hay/ grazing does she get??

Ok thanks all. Have rung vets and am waiting for vet to ring me back when he's finished his rounds. I am going to feel such a muppet if she's not but I kinda need to know if she is! Haven't got through to her breeders yet to see what they say but will keep trying.

MST - she gets a small handful of hi-fi and half a handful of blue chip twice a day. She gets 6-7 hours grazing a day, and has ad-lib high fibre horsehage when in, but doesn't gorge it, she gets through between 1/2 - 3/4 slice in 24 hours.
She was extremely bloated when I got her and then deflated lol. But this is a different shape to when she was bloated.
I'll keep my fingers crossed it is bloating or just her shape at this age.

Vet is coming tuesday to do a blood test, will update with results when I get them.
Thankyou all again for your advice.

Had blood test results back - she is not in-foal, phew!!!

The vet also agreed she looks pregnant. She's definately an odd shape but now I know for sure she's not expecting, hopefully starting some proper exercise may work the belly off!

Thanks all for your advice, I can now stop worrying
