What age do you put headcollars on your foals

just wondered at what age do you put headcollars on your foals i have just put mine on at 5 month and they are being very well behaved on the lead rope now.

I put a foal slip on at bout 3 days old as I normally turn them out for a few hours untill about a week old then they come in at night and out first thing.

Ours have a headcollar on by day two after birth and taught to lead from that age too.It is soo much easier than having to fight with them when they are older.We always use leather headcollars,never nylon.

The earlier the better! the smaller and younger they are, the easier it is to teach them...

Day one, no pressure applied teaches them that it is not anything to worry about

The following day after they are born is their first day of wearing a foal slip and from then on in, they wear them most days till around the 6 months stage.

I think i will have to start putting my head collars on when they are born next year as i have 3 foals due

the first day after they are born but if born early in the morning then a few hours after they are born x

Like many others, within 24 hours of birth, the sooner the better.

Saying that I bred a colt this year that fought me every single day, he had the halter on for a few minutes, just on, I didn't lead him until he was 5 months old, he still argued. He wasn't scared, or in pain because he could be handled without one, especially around his head, he was just colty, barged, bit and kicked, me, and his mum.

The day after he was weaned he walked up to me and put his nose in the halter and is as sweet as pie now.
