What age do you start Lungeing??

I longline rather than lunge but they won't be doing it propperly untill their the age to be broken but I can see the value with even teaching a yearling to lunge for 5 mins as its just other manners and can be usful for diagnostic reasons or showing paces to prospective buyers.

I got mine started at about 2 years old, only very gently, with someone leading him, and started running him up in hand to practice for shows and then he was a bit more mentaly prepared for breaking in properly.

Thanks everyone, just was unsure as my vet said to start lungeing him to stop him getting bored (like 6months ago) to give him something to think about.(he's coming up 2year this year)Not yet had the time or place to do it. So just woundered what others do with theirs and what age?? X

Two-ish, depending on their build and maturity etc.

Keep it down to a few minutes at a time. I don't like the strain it puts on joints, etc. There have been a number of debates regarding lunging any horse.

I like to lunge eliptically, i.e. I don't stick to a pure circle, I move so the horse has time to stretch long and straight.

I ditto two-ish, or at least that's when I started doing mine. I would never canter her though and only ever did walk and trot. (Started cantering at 3, but still only very small amounts and more because she wanted to!!

) I would also never do more than about 15 minutes from start to finish. Was a good way for them to get use to the voice and bridle, saddle, flappy stirrups etc. Then over the winter I did nothing, and started again in the spring of when she was three.
