What age horses do you buy??

We tend to go for 4/5/6 yr olds that have been broken and done a little bit but with the main aim to bring on and sell (for more money) and having a bit of fun inbetween. I was wondering what ages other poeple go for, why, and how that should reflect in price?

I generally buy the majority of my horses as yearlings.

I do have, and still occasionally buy, some older horses but they are for a purpose and not for me to ride.
 
I prefer the younger ones, we got one as 3 1/2 year old then I got one who was 8 but don't want to do that again, he hadn't done what we had been told he had done!
 
I always seem to buy yearlings!
I've never bought an older horse that is already 'rideable'

I must be mad! Although if I were to buy another horse now I would definately go for something older, like about 8 or 9.
 
Chex was 16 when I bought him, which is older than I would have thought of buying, but its turned out to be a brilliant decision. I wouldn't buy anything younger than 7, I don't have the time or experience for breaking.
 
My first horse i got was a 13yo but he was very low milage and cheap and i was limited on funds. Ive just brought a 8month old colt. If i had the money to buy another riding horse the it would have to be around 4-6yo.

Well Blossy was 9 when i brought her. Wasnt really on the lookout for a horse at the time tho!

Archie was 5.

I wont be buying again tho, hopefully breeding my own from now on

Originally I would have said 12/13 as I was coming back into riding but ended up with an 8 year old!

He's taught me alot though and I feel that I could deal with 5/6 year old that had the odd paddy now although I wouldnt be confident enough to bring on a youngster.

I did back a 5 year old though with my mum once. We decided to sell him on somewhere he'd do better and the lady who took him was hacking him on the road within 3 days! All too easy to make a mistake though.
 
bought all of mine at 3/4, my current 2 are exracers so I only had to give them a bit of time off and then restart them...

If I buy another next year I'll be looking for an older schoolmaster who has been there and done it.... minimum of 8 I think....
 
Have only ever bought 3 - first was rising 6, second was 11 (rising 6 turned out to be a big mistake), third (and final!!) was rising 5 as the 11yo was a big mistake!


Think in future if I had to I'd buy 4/5 yo
 
I prefer them young. My first pony (when i was 9) was a 5year old, then i had a 12 year old (just to break the pattern) then a 6year old, then i got rocky when he was a 4year old.
Now i've had sort of every sort of age really i would say in the future if i was to get another one, i would go for a 4year old again, maybe a 3year old. Something broken and started but not done much with.
 
my 1st was 16, 2nd was a yearling, then a 11 year old, followed by a nutty 13 year old (still nutty at 26!), had a 18 year old dumped on me (yes - as it sounds but they know i will look after it until that time comes) then a foal, then a 23 year old (given) and then last year i got a 9 year old!

hence - i have ended up with 7 neds who are now between 3 and 26 - 4 of them are 22 or over now!
next year planning on the safe arrival of 2 foals so i will have some youngsters to play with as the others are mainly happy content field ornaments

i go off the horse as an individual - like the 23 year old i was given - he is fab at hacking so a nice safe hack - whereas the 9 year old etc - the fun one etc etc i do realise however yes - i am nutty taking on a 23 year old! (and wouldnt have actually gone out with money in hand looking for one of such an age)
