what age is too old eventing?

I thought 16,17 etc was old but Over to you is 18 this year isnt he? And having another go at Badminton.

Was just thinking about it as we are thinking of buying Mac and he is 13 this year.

He was showjumped for 3 years and got up to a Grade A in this time, then had 4 years off in the field doing nothing then came to me. So has had low mileage on his legs and brain!! And he is like a spring chicken!! Loves a good gallop!!

But 13 just seems so old to me! Ive never bought anything older then 7!!!

Whats your opinions on eventing older horses??
 
Well I thought ive got (providing he stays fit well and healthy) at least 5yrs in him inc this year. Which would be worth it

dont see why you shouldnt get a good few yeares out of him. that horse of caroline ryan bells went round badminton well in his teens and is still doing ON's now with someone thoough he must be past twenty now. as long as no major injury in the past should be fine.
 
How old was Matt Ryans horse at the Olympics? Twenty something?

You obviously think a lot of Mac as a few months ago before you really started riding him you said about them selling him and wanting about 10K+ can't remember exactly, and how he was worth every penny. Since then he's proved that he is up for eventing he's only aged a few more months so if you thought he was worth it back then with an unproven record he has to be worth buying now - but agree it quick before he gets placed in anything else

Sandy? He was about 16 but went around Burghley at 18!
 
Think u mean Tic Toc - he was 17 when he won Olympics wasn't he. And Glengarrick went to WEG last year and narrowly missed a medal age 20.

Chocolate has just started aged 16 and his first one wasn't a bad result, but he is very fit and has the mileage of perhaps a 5 year old after his long lay off with a broken pelvis.
I think they perhaps take longer to recover afterwards, and get tired easier after a long day, but if you look at many of the ages in the pogramme there are loads of oldies competing.
Keeping a herd of older horses I would say there is a marked difference after the age of twenty, they look older and behave slower. I probably wouldn't do more than low level fun stuff with an over 20 year old (watch zillions of people reply saying they event their 25 year old now!)
 
Have always thought of horses being in their prime between the ages of 8-12yrs depending on how quickly they've been brought on, so 13's a good age to buy as you benefit from the hard work put in by someone else, with hopefully a good few years ahead of you.
 
zak is 13 and is definitely not too old!!!
he is still racing around winning ODE's and HT's etc-actually now he is older he seems to be better at them!his SJ has improved so much, as he is now calm and doesnt rush through them
