what age to start a youngster?

I went to look at a youngster today to buy, who turns 4 in May. The horse has started lightly schooling, and I was wondering... if I was to buy... what sort of work would be sensible to carry on with? or am I best to turn away for the summer? xx
 
My youngster is the same age.....he was backed last Summer and then has had the winter off completely. I got on him about 2 weeks ago, and plan to build his work up gradually.....I am not planning on him having any more time off, but I am mainly a happy hacker, so he wont exactly be pushed to his limits!!
 
Ohhhh I just can't make my mind up - she really is the sweetest thing ever! I am just worried that maybe because she was only broken in 5 months ago that if I bought her I should give her some months off to mature?? or... could I do light schooling? EEK DECISIONS DECISIONS
 
I would probably do light schooling/hacking over the summer and then turn away for the Winter if I was thinking of buying her.
 
Gentle stuff, show her things rather than working her. Then turn away for nice break over winter. How much so depends on the horse. I hav 2 3 yr olds, one (7/8 tb) ready for backing & other (arab) wont be ready for another 2 years (very late maturing line).
 
Your 4 year old is ready to be rebacked and ridden away. Aways listen to what they tell you. Remember baby brains can only cope with short lessons. Hack out in company, on your own when ready. Small show for baby outings. Enjoy but with low expectations and you might be pleasantly surprised, as you youngsters confidance grows. If in your not sure how much to ask, always keep it simple. Hope this helps a litle.:D
