What age will a newforester stop growing?

A forest bred 5 year old will be fully grown. She'll fill out etc in work but doubt she'll get taller.

If she's just over 14hh you don't want her to grow much more anyway. She'll go over height at 14.2hh

She's had a foal and is just over 14hh - 14.1 while underweight, i'd have thought a bit more weight and some muscle and she'd be 14.2. But in general, she looks much bigger that my 14hh welsh c

Foresters are generally 'big about'. This is one of the reasons so many adults ride them, they really take up the leg and a 6ft rider can easily ride them without looking too big.

Yeh she seems long, n broad, even though underweight, she really needs lots of time and love, she's been running wild all her life pretty much, had a foal and is underweight and scared of ppl and underweight :)

Erm...that'd be me then.

Our 14.2hh Brock herd gelding has not gained any height since he was five, but he has become more....'round'.

This is the 'fat lad'

mine did not grow taller after the age of 5 but he did fill out loads between 5-7 he grew very wide and chunky and went up a saddle width and a rug size.

neil your pony is a gorgeous chunky fellow

as a comparision this is my forester aged 5 when i just got him - he is smaller though at only 13.2

Oh yeah, that's a New Forest gelding alright, you can tell by the hint of a crest (which is impossible to get rid of, believe me, I've tried) and the sense of humour (umm, fifth leg in the last photo:eek:).

When I started riding again three years ago, I had thoughts of a stunning 17hh hunter or a 15.2 Polish Arab. Now I could not be parted from Harry, he's my best mate, and as silly as I am :D

my gelding used to be a forest run stallion when he was younger and he likes relaxing often!!!! i think a lot of them are naturally very good doers and have big characters. mine often has an expression as if someone has told him a good joke!

More a matter of diameter rather than height I would have thought.

A friend of ours has a 14.2 Sec D and she is very similar in build and height to Harry, but possibly a little longer in the body.

I think you would be safest to not commit to anything until they are 7/8 years old. Then any changes should just be down to muscling up type stuff rather than actual growing upwards.

With regards to height, your idea of 14.2 and an official JMB measuring vet's idea of 14.2 may be quite different... I think they will not issue the lifetime certificate until they are over 7 anyway, which tallies with what I found out for myself.

I had one who grew 2 inches in 18 months aged roughly 5 1/2 to 7 years. I am assuming it was because I fed him some hard feed and pampered him by stabling overnight ... It was fine by me though, he went from 13.3 to 14.1, so a much better height to finish up :)

I don't see what difference it makes whether they are stud or forest bred quite honestly. If anything, I would think the FB ones were more likely to grow on once taken off the forest and put in a field with better grass (better nourishment).

You are so right there - it is really difficult to estimate a height and even measuring them yourself is often different to how a vet would measure them. I bought my pony as aprox 14.1 age 5 but he did not look much bigger than my friends 12.3 exmoor and she kept saying are you sure he is 14.1. Vet measured him unofficially when he came to give him his jabs in Jan this year at 7 and said he is not 14.1 he is more like 13.2 not that it matters as I will not get any taller.
