What age would you stop riding?

My daughter has a youngster who keeps rearing (everything checked - back, teeth etc - all okay) so is employing the help of an 89 year old who still rides, teaches and is just amazing! She's confident that she can sort out our youngster and says "Your horse must be a pleasure to ride" and her lessons are much sought after! I also have a friend who's 71 - looks ten years younger - just found a new man after being widowed seven years ago - and now horseless (her last horse was a TB ex-eventer which had to be put down a couple of years ago) and loves nothing more than riding my daughter's feisty chestnut TB mare, ex pointer. If you feel good - why stop riding?????

I intend to ride as long as possible. And Geoff billington I believe is 58 if I can do my maths right. And the height he still jumps I don't think you'll have a problem!

Im 61 this year, and for the last 2 years have been bringing on a very difficult youngster, who is just getting the message, waiting in the wings to start on next year are an Exmoor and an Arab mare with severe nerves. Yes the falls do hurt , my recent broken breast bone took nearly 9 weeks to heal, and last years dislocated knee still gives me agro, but im not ready to hang up the hat yet and hope I will never have to.....or resort to a quiet safe cob. Just button up the back protector a bit tighter (bought rather late after the broken breast bone scenario). Dont think baking cakes is quite my forte.

Until you feel it is time to 'retire'

I am almost 70 and have no plans to stop yet, although what I do has eased up. I have a friend who was still hunting regularly at 76.

I am intending to ride for as long as I am physically able. My horse is in her twenties and I retired from teaching recently and have some spare time now, so earlier this year, I bought myself a 2-yr old cob to bring on. I will say though that I know I don't bounce like I used to, so made sure that the filly is of the non-spooky variety.

Ages yet! My friend is in her late 60's and in the process of breaking in her new 4yo. Also have an old battle axe at the yard who must be over 70 who still plods out on her old nag a few days each week.
