What ago to castrate

I have a 6 month old jrtx and I'm thinking about castration. He is quite good, has the odd monkey moment where he has selective hearing and very occasionally humps things. He has been cocking his leg for quite a while now and you can see all his 'bits and pieces'! I would rather do it before he gets to know about ladies and starts to wander off to see them!! But also he is quite small 5kg

Also how long would it take for him to recover, and likely cost.

CC, how come you waited till then to have him done? Was there any particular reason?

Herman needs to be booked in but as we're (still) living at OHs dads house with the nasty terrier I'm going to wait till we're back home (should be within a month! Can't wait!), so he'll be about 13/14 months old.

Last time I weighed him, he was about 36kg (does weight/height/breed make a difference as to when they get done?!)
 
Molly, only got him at six months, behavioural issues started at 12 months, health issues manifested themselves at 18 months.
We were also waiting to see how he turned out, GSDs change shape a hell of a lot in their youth but as predicted and what with all his issues, he indeed never turned out to be a stud.

He was having recurring UTIs and he had an enlarged prostate and we figured it was two less things to get infected......didn't change his character at all but was also training heavily so don't know what influence the op had.
 
Our border terrier x JRT was supposed to be £65 got him done for £35 :) had him done at 5 and half months very well developed :) he felt sorry for him self for about 2 days then after that back to his old self :) ive already seen a differance in him i also have my dogs done as soon as they drop and are ready.
 
We waiting until 9 months with Jack but only because he had one retained so had to have a full 'spay' so we wanted to leave him about as long as we would have a bitch.
 
My 2 cocker spaniels were done at 8 months old. Think we paid about £120 each - our vet charged on weight (of dogs, not bits!) Collecting them from the vets was the most heart-breaking thing ever! Wilbs just sat down and cried - he wouldn't walk! But I couldn't pick him up as he cried :( He was really swollen for a few days, but a week later and all was fine. Elvis seemed to take it on the chin but the buster collar drove him mental!
 
We had Bryn, our Large Munsterlander "done" at twelve months; we would have had him castrated earlier but everyone told us to wait. From an adorable puppy, he became a horrible young dog to the point where we found him, at the best, irritating, and at the worst, wished we'd never bought him! When we collected him from the vet, he was fine, so fine in fact that, the following morning, he VERY accidentally ended up in the same room as our Golden Retriever bitch, who was in season, and we found them very securely tied! Cost of castration was £129, cost of course of injections for Goldie to ensure there would be no Large Munsterlander X Goldie pups was £95!

However, following castration, Bryn has become the most wonderful, dopey dog ever and is SO adorable - wouldn't be without him!
 
i had teddy my rotweiler done at 6 months

my vets i had him vaccinated wouldnt do it til he was 12 months

but my horse vet who is further away but just as good with small animals was fine to do it

so it may vary with vet also

in all it cost me 250 but that included removing a dew claw off each rear paw.

that included all after care too though.

but not the visits for one infected dew claw removal.

he wasnt showing any signs of his friskyness or anything but i didnt want to wait for them to appear as he was on a yard with other dogs and i had no interest in breeding him although did have some interest in him as a stud dog.

even though he wasnt kc registered, so go figure.
