I need help badly. Mr P is 5. I bought him in March 2012, horrifically underweight with a huge red worm burden. He had many many colics, After a stay at Oakham Veterinary I was told he had colitis caused by massive red worm damage. I was also told that his gut would continually renew and grow and in time this would repair. Good feed etc.. was paramount. We have not had a colic in 4 months

But at the beginning on July I had to call the vet out, he was diagnosed with a sheath infection. He had 3 boxes of Norodine, 2 tubs of flamazine, 5 sedations, cleans and a Newmarket sheath broth over a period of 3 weeks. Swabs were taken and showed bacteria and anaerobic bacteria. Yesterday I thought he had poohed on his legs. As I went to wash it off I realised it was pus, his sheath was massively swollen and full of gunk. Called vet again who found lots of tears in his sheath cover, he thinks a fungal infection this time. He also found another willy bean even though one was removed in July.
Sedated, washed in Imaverol and given a huge shot of Bute to bring swelling down. Today he is so sad.
Doesnt want to be near his field mates, doesnt want to talk to his gf across the fence, double barrelling at his best friend. Just wanting to be left alone. I brought him in his temp was 37.7, which is high for him. His gums are very very pale and hes drinking way more than normal. He usually has one bucket of water a night, lately its 3+ buckets a night. I rang vets who said to give him a sachet of Danillon and talk to vet tomorrow. I am at my wits end and I am hoping some of you clever people will see something Im missing. If you got this far I will share my kit kat with you xxx

Thank you

Anaemia? Internal bleeding? Either way with all those infections it sounds as though his immune system is shot - do you know whether he is deficient in one or more minerals? Maybe you could investigate that with Forageplus - does his hoof horn show any problems?

he sounds like my boy a few years ago ,he had a virus they couldnt put their finger on ,he had infection after infection. we put him on milk thistle to help his liver and red cell which helps the blood recover, and pro and prebiotics which die off with lots of antibiotics. i would think your boy has a lot of illness from the worm burden dying -it poisons the system, but it also wrecks the immune system so you need something to build that back up ,maybe someone else can recommend something like echinacea ? forgot to add my boy did recover . good luck.x

Iv not really got much experience with this but i will say good luck and keep going, even though it seems like its one thing after another and its never ending. He will come right in time, when the immune system is down often everything seems to come at once. Horses are stronger than we give them credit for, dont give up hope and good luck!
