Why would anyone consider an old, damaged and dangerous riding hat suitable for use in a riding school?! And what difference does it make whether you're an experienced or occasional rider? You can fall off whatever level you are. Idiots!! I don't know which is worse, the ad or the fact that someone bought it!
 
We have this trouble all the time in the tack shop where I work. People come in to have their child measured for a riding hat and then say they can get one cheaper on ebay. I always say that you should never buy a second hand hat due to the fact you dont know if it's damaged but they don't listen! It's scary when they would rather save a few pennies than ensure the safety of their kids head!!! :eek:
 
So shocked at this! seen a poster lately in my tack store about oilver townend and his terrible fall, showed a picture of the hat on the inside completely shocking. Dont understand why people think an extra £20 or so is worth the cost of their life.
 
I had an awful fall at a jump where I ended up with my foot stuck (in safety stirrups :() and I was bounced on my head and dragged before my foot came free (so my husband tells me, I don't remember anything after seeing the flag at the jump and then coming round wondering why he was putting a blanket over me! :confused:) My hat looked perfect - I could have sold that on to some unsuspecting person - it went straight in the bin.
 
I've had similar as I had an accident in 2010 where I got chucked off and landed head first onto a piece of slate (it was a letter marker in our 'makeshift' school in the field at my old yard). Hat looked perfect but there was no chance it was going back on my head so we cut the straps off and took it to the local dump but made sure it got thoroughly buried to try and discourage people from stealing it and selling it on to some poor unsuspecting person.

I totally agree with you about the comparison between saving a few quid and protecting your head, it's really not worth the risks!
 
I recently had a very nasty fall, and replaced my hat. I was asked by someone who works in the racing industry if it had any visible damage and if it ddn't why did I replace it!
Had a great time buying a new hat, went into the tack shop, explained the situation, and they asked me if the hat was cracked, and if not why was I replacing it? WTF??!!
I found the whole thing very strange
 
I've been told that if your hat has taken a knock, even if it isn't showing any visible signs of damage that it should still be thrown away because the material has shock absorbing properties and it's those that go in a fall. So if you fell off again the cushioning effect wouldn't be there any more. Also heard that you should regularly change your hat every few years - must confess I'm guilty of not doing that.
