Sorry to post this but am mostly just needing to get this off my chest..am shaking like a leaf & in need of a stiff drink/coffee cake & probably a damn good shake!

Awful awful awful shock so feel free to have a very stiff drink for me-I need to do a late check on my poor TB mare. Have swapped my 4's stables round after I finally sold my New Forest last weekend, my lovely TB mare Jessie (25) was in the outside box on her own & I wanted her to be in the warmer stone barn, slightly smaller stables but she'd be with her friends in the adjoining boxes-she's spent the week (out in day) with a barely disturbed bed & droppings suggesting she has been stood over the door all night to be nearer the others..so i moved her in yesterday eve & put her between her mare friend & my 3yr old gelding who's buddy has just been sold. She's always been colic prone since she came out of racing at 7 when i bought her so always have to be very careful with her..plus she's my favourite! She's always been quite flirtatious but my 3 yr old was getting bullied/bitten by my 17hh gelding thru the adjoining window so decided to swap so Jessie could be in the biggest of the three inner boxes.I have miscanthus pellets & rubber matts tho had moved one mat (not her bed area) and washed the flagstone floor down this am & it was damp but drying.she's used to that box as was hers before..but about 5pm I heard a splash & ran to her-my poor girl had probably swished & waved a leg at my 3yr old pestering her over the wall & slipped & gone right over.she was massively cast and fell in a very bad position so further jammed herself. She was lying there groaning & eyes rolling, I opened her door & held her & hugged her neck, she seemed to calm and I kept telling her its ok, please get up, I'll help you. She was obviously very shaken & stuck but allowed me to maneouver her legs & push & tug her(pointless pushing but you try) I got desperate as it was now half an hour then and she had slipped three times trying to get up but her back legs were either broken, not strong enough or simply too stuck. she re wedged herself half in & half out of the box with a leg either side of the door frame..I had been trying to call the fire service but bloody phone was not playing..so pulled out all the tyres my 4 have their waters in and thank GOD I had been to tired to pick up my large bale hay today so had got 4 small bales..which I used with the tyres to try & support her & finally gradually she managed to struggle back up. I think my heart had stopped about 15 mins into the whole drama-you know that feeling I'm sure!I just hugged her & led her out onto the yard to have a safe flat block paved surface to check her over. lots of cuddles & 2.5 hours with her she was calmly eating her hay, never sweated, had poo'd and been put back in the biggest outer box where no delinquents could pester her and she seemed calm & happy there & didn't call once. I hosed all her legs down..only one bleeding cut to the front of her ns fetlock but not needing stitching...How she didn't have more cuts I will never know but am now just worried because of her age/shock/bruising etc and risk of stress colic. I led her around the yard a few times when she looked a bit swishy & raised her back legs a few times(gripey not kicky) and gave her 3/4 of a tube of magnesium calmer(feedmark) instead of bute...as the bute was home & I felt the calmer would hopefully take the edge off any stress/shock without masking anything.....will prob give her some bute in the morning, tho not sure if I should this eve on top of the calmer..her neck has two big hard bumps but she's not lame just a bit stiff, understandably...does anyone feed arnica & how much/where/quantity etc....we all have our own favourite tricks for various injuries, honey being one of mine, but for cuts, she was incredibly lucky I have to say...brandy for me once I'm happy & home after i check her at ten ish...but does anyone have any magic tricks (other than cold hosing) for bruising and anything for falls/shock? tbh I think it happened so fast I don't think she had much time to panic till she was down..poor girl I feel absolutely awful for her :(

ARGH! You poor things! :(

You must feel so shaken up!
Thank god you have a trust bond with your mare for her to let you help her!
Glad everything turned out okay!
Sending massive hugs and biiig slices of chocolate cakes xx

Thank you:-)..I've had her so long & we're so close, she doesn't like other people doing anything for her & even gets peeved if i ever have anyone do them for me & visibly sulks!so very glad we have that trust...I was terrified as really thought it was that time..think her little filly up at Rainbow bridge was helping watch over her, thank God it happened while I was there..I'm stopping for chocolate cakes and brandy on the way home when i check her later..xx
She's fine, now go and have a good cry !! Hugs!! XX

eyes are raining believe me DD! I almost cried in the box, but she lifted her head, looked back up at me & groan/sighed so I pulled it together...now my polar bear has dried off I am going to make his white fur soggy again...and probably a few chocolate smudges on him too...I did warn I may need a good shake!xx:eek:

She'll probably be a bit stiff and sore for a few days but I'd just make sure she gets out tomorrow so she can loosen up and keep a close eye on her. It sounds like it was terrifying! I'm very impressed you managed to get her up on your own though.
My Arab threw herself on the floor last week (reared up and tipped over sideways) and I was terrified she'd really hurt herself but she had the weekend off and had the physio today (arranged before the fall) and seems to have suffered no ill effects luckily.
I'm sure your girl will be fine, just keep an eye on her over the next few days :)

phew! glad she is ok! let all your tears out- its only natural!

i had a similar-ish experience while out hacking with my mare this year- its VERY scary, and its not until a good while after that the shock of what has just happened sinks in!

im sure she'l be fine, but a good idea to give her some bute tomorrow- you'l be sore, so you'l have an idea of how she'l be feeling.

ive had my mare since she was 2, so i know what you mean about the trust and bond- it makes helping easier in a way, as they are calmer... but at the same time it makes things so much harder. ;)

Poor you. You've had several huge shocks over the last few weeks, that can't be nice. You've got my number, so if you feel you want to chat, or need help don't hesitate to call.
Sure your old mare will be fine, just shaken and probably a bit stiff tomorrow, but don't worry, you know what you're doing and she'll love the attention!

Oh dear , bless you both , how scary.

Im sure she,ll just be a bit stiff in the morning but fine....

Just been online & bought her some zero bute from feedmark..will be a day late, but will help her...shame we can't take it!..x

Thank you...am still shaking like a bag of petrified leaves!...I think they all need stabilisers & safety harnesses as standard! My other mare did similar to your arab but used me as a cushion which was a bit of a life changer, that was horrible but she was ok..even righted her original racing injury in the process somehow which was the cause of her rearing...I do hope your girl is ok and how lucky for you to have a physio booked-peace of mind is a wonderful thing..as is hindsight!no idea how the hec i managed to get her up, but couldn't leave her as every time I tried she panicked..need to get my front room rubber matted & keep her in on the sofa at this rate at least its warm in here!x

thank you...lots of soggy keys here and my poor dog now dried twice after the rain & eye rain is soggy again...with chocolate smudges too(not sure how any crumbs happened!) its that bond that keeps you calm & get the adrenalin to get you through & deal with it....and that makes the thoughts fly round your head like a rabid mosquito when you sit still...all the what ifs & thank Gods..poor girl...am off to check on her again now so keep everything crossed...and got her some polos & carrots to cheer her up...thanks re the bute..def decided none this eve just incase as don't want to cover anything..have dug out all my arnica creams & going to try get some more tomorrow in horse size as these are just silly!!!xx

So glad you are both ok, she will be stiff for a few days but by the sounds of it totally fine, tough ol' bird :D

Big hugs for you both

x

First of all well done for staying calm enough to actually help her. You both must have been terrified, it also sounds as if you have a very good bond with your mare which would have calmed her down :) Let us know how she is then have a brandy and get a good sleep to calm your nerves you deserve it! x

I know the feeling, I moved to new yard was waiting of my rubber mats to be layed, my boy was standing in stable, tacked up, went to lead him out had a panic fell over and then couldn't get up for slipping on the concrete.. Omg did I panic!! It's horrible.. I was also convinced his legs couldn't get him up or were broken because of the way he fell.. Horrible situation but I'm convinced that it looked worse than it was.. Lots of hugs for you and ur girl x

Thank you:-) needless to say remaining 4 brandied mince pies helped!was going to pm you to thank you for this am...was lovely to meet you & Ebby...she was wonderful...and one tired boy asleep on my lap here!I kept telling Jessie about Horse and how spritely he looked...that also helped as you know what will have been going through my mind! What is it with stables & doors!! Sensible head back on and am remembering to breath too!was funny when we got home this eve, Connie went rushing off & instead of a tennis ball he brought me his thundershirt and put it in my lap! We saw a few dogs today, one whippet..everything else got the super bark...yet she only got a very tuneful long whine....excellent progress!:-)xxx

Glad the other mince pies helped! lol Connie is so hansom!
Think Horse thought Connie was a hound, it is about as excited as he can manage now, but if you are nearly 31, then it is allowed!! He was slow at coming up for his dinner, so I'm keeping a close eye on him. Madame Meg was a toad, she kicked a hole in her bucket in protest.
Honestly, if there is anything I can do, give me a ring. Have a hug and get a good nights sleep.

We have found that a good dose of rescue remedy (all round) helps in these situations, it is very good for shock.
We have used arnica for bruising but sorry I can't tell you how much, some-one else gave it to us.
It must have been a terrifying experience, well done for staying calm enough to find a way of helping her up. When we thought our mare had got cast, it took 3 of us (we had to ring elderly father to help) to move her. Sadly she had had a stroke so never did stand up. I'm sure your mare will be fine in a few days.

Big hugs, I hope she is OK, and the bumps and bruises are superficial. Poor you, at least you were there with her. Well done.

Few years ago was working on yard and stallion got cast and badly bruised all his side and was due sj comp following week, we used arnica available from boots, superdrug etc for a few pounds and we gave 2 tablets morning and evenig until soreness had gone and it works a treat and completely natural so nasty side effects, we always keep some in the cupboard. I also have arnica cream after riding racehorses and getting headbutted by some horses that had high head carriages and sensitive mouths after being ridden by heavy handed boys it worked a treat and used on horses too. so too options depending on if horse is fussy with tablets or not, but i would recomend them to any one.
Hope she is not too sore and u get over the shock x

Sherbie & Ginger Bear & Mik thank you...Pearlsacarolsinger & Cherrydrops also thank you both esp for the arnica & rescue remedy..I've just found some lavendar oil too which I'm sure would help too...just home so update time!

Good news!:D..just home from checking her, think she will be as sore & stiff as hell in the morning, but she snuffled out my pockets for treats(that they don't get as a rule!) like a top sniffer horse(I think I ought to copyright that phrase or whatever you do with phrases!!) and exchanged her emergency carrots for a nice golden healthy poo..more sweet smelling than stressy sour, so thats good...and had drunk half her water(more than the usual 4 inches over night), scoffed all her hay-how I'm not sure as she normally has less and it lasts till morning..comfort eating?!) and was most obliging when offered a small extra alfalfa & extra jumbo net of hay....hock & fetlock a bit puffy & sore, neck a bit stiff, but full of licks & cuddles and believe me she is not a lickey horse...fingers crossed she's on the mend as per strict instructions...bad news is I've missed all the shops so no brandy or cake..but am doing as told, being careful and have a polar bear asleep on my lap to make sure I keep out of trouble!Hmm...do I try some medicinal sloe gin...hope its ready!x

Christmas Crackers, thank you again too(from me & Connor!)..Madam sounds very mischievous..Jessie likes to stand in/on her buckets & rolls them between her back legs and tries to turn them inside out...I used to get cross at this, but having watched her in action, I guess its also allowed simply for the amount of effort she puts in! I do hope Horse is ok & Connie didn't frighten him or wind him up too much...& that he's ok in the morning..cuddles for him too. Connor carried my second box of mince pies in from the truck and put them on the sofa, then took my mobile in its case & put it on his bed..i think he's trying to suggest that I'm such a lightweight that after today he's not so sure I can even cope with the trace amount of Brandy in them....but thinking about it, his breeds cousins (GSD's) were used frequently as Guide Dogs too and he's obviously honed his shepherding instincts too....not a day goes by they don't teach us something or make us laugh..thank God! Thank you again xx ps I'll pm you some veteran stuff I've just found

Excellent news! So glad she (and you!) is feeling better :)

My TB dd this 2 me about 5 times.

Very scarey, the first time I could not get him up, eyes rolling and teeth knawing, I ran to the house to call the hunt :( no answer , I could not leave him like that!!!

Went to te kennels, and they could not come until much later.

So sobbed my way home, to find him,,,,, stood at the gate very cross that his tea was late!!!!! Little did he know how close he came.

They do get us worried these silly TBs, drama kings and queens.

She is fine now, don't dwell on it , as I did, and cherish her more xxxx

I know the feeling, my tb panicked & fell in a new stable on a wet concrete floor.. Had just moved stables & hadn't had a chance to put my matting down, he had a big straw bed but had just mucked out & put the bed up! He attempted to get up like 3 times but kept slipping & couldn't get his legs under him.. I was certain he''d broken a leg.. He was fine just grazed & not even stiff the next day..
