Sorry to post this but am mostly just needing to get this off my chest..am shaking like a leaf & in need of a stiff drink/coffee cake & probably a damn good shake!
Awful awful awful shock so feel free to have a very stiff drink for me-I need to do a late check on my poor TB mare. Have swapped my 4's stables round after I finally sold my New Forest last weekend, my lovely TB mare Jessie (25) was in the outside box on her own & I wanted her to be in the warmer stone barn, slightly smaller stables but she'd be with her friends in the adjoining boxes-she's spent the week (out in day) with a barely disturbed bed & droppings suggesting she has been stood over the door all night to be nearer the others..so i moved her in yesterday eve & put her between her mare friend & my 3yr old gelding who's buddy has just been sold. She's always been colic prone since she came out of racing at 7 when i bought her so always have to be very careful with her..plus she's my favourite! She's always been quite flirtatious but my 3 yr old was getting bullied/bitten by my 17hh gelding thru the adjoining window so decided to swap so Jessie could be in the biggest of the three inner boxes.I have miscanthus pellets & rubber matts tho had moved one mat (not her bed area) and washed the flagstone floor down this am & it was damp but drying.she's used to that box as was hers before..but about 5pm I heard a splash & ran to her-my poor girl had probably swished & waved a leg at my 3yr old pestering her over the wall & slipped & gone right over.she was massively cast and fell in a very bad position so further jammed herself. She was lying there groaning & eyes rolling, I opened her door & held her & hugged her neck, she seemed to calm and I kept telling her its ok, please get up, I'll help you. She was obviously very shaken & stuck but allowed me to maneouver her legs & push & tug her(pointless pushing but you try) I got desperate as it was now half an hour then and she had slipped three times trying to get up but her back legs were either broken, not strong enough or simply too stuck. she re wedged herself half in & half out of the box with a leg either side of the door frame..I had been trying to call the fire service but bloody phone was not playing..so pulled out all the tyres my 4 have their waters in and thank GOD I had been to tired to pick up my large bale hay today so had got 4 small bales..which I used with the tyres to try & support her & finally gradually she managed to struggle back up. I think my heart had stopped about 15 mins into the whole drama-you know that feeling I'm sure!I just hugged her & led her out onto the yard to have a safe flat block paved surface to check her over. lots of cuddles & 2.5 hours with her she was calmly eating her hay, never sweated, had poo'd and been put back in the biggest outer box where no delinquents could pester her and she seemed calm & happy there & didn't call once. I hosed all her legs down..only one bleeding cut to the front of her ns fetlock but not needing stitching...How she didn't have more cuts I will never know but am now just worried because of her age/shock/bruising etc and risk of stress colic. I led her around the yard a few times when she looked a bit swishy & raised her back legs a few times(gripey not kicky) and gave her 3/4 of a tube of magnesium calmer(feedmark) instead of bute...as the bute was home & I felt the calmer would hopefully take the edge off any stress/shock without masking anything.....will prob give her some bute in the morning, tho not sure if I should this eve on top of the calmer..her neck has two big hard bumps but she's not lame just a bit stiff, understandably...does anyone feed arnica & how much/where/quantity etc....we all have our own favourite tricks for various injuries, honey being one of mine, but for cuts, she was incredibly lucky I have to say...brandy for me once I'm happy & home after i check her at ten ish...but does anyone have any magic tricks (other than cold hosing) for bruising and anything for falls/shock? tbh I think it happened so fast I don't think she had much time to panic till she was down..poor girl I feel absolutely awful for her
