Just wondered folks thoughts - on a yard with other liveries and can be at times rather challenging!! You get that everywhere granted...

But recently because some folk use spare boxes and never tidy up after their horse we are now banned form using spare stables. So angry as handy to clip and wash horses in esp in winter. So mindless lazy individuals spoil it for the rest of us.

Also liveries who cannot sweep up the yard after trailing bedding/hay everywhere.
They block the muck heap by dumping muck right at entrance so you cant get in with loads and end up with the muck almost into car park!!!

Honestly some folk must just live in pig sty's as they even cant figure out how to use a bin( just throw on top and it falls out as then full of bags - even thogh we have wind blowing through yard - ( least push it down).....

Tools not put away safely, wheel barrows just left stranded/abandoned.

So annoyed as most is common sense and decency.

Any more to add to list!!!
On a rant mode the day sorry.

Now i don't mind people borrowing my things such as shaving forks but when i have to spend 10 minutes going around the yard looking for them and even worse when i find them broken!

More than happy for people to borrow anything but please please please return it to where it was found AND in the same condition in which it was taken. A while back "someone" used to use my lunge bridle - I always cleaned it after use, and it would be used and returned dirty - grr!! Little thing I know, but somewhat annoying.

Also the folks who freely help themselves to tea, coffee, biscuits, etc but never manage to bring any supplies themselves

^^^^ This annoys me bigtime!!! At my old yard a broom got broken and just left and then at the new yard I found my new broom broken and constantly had to go hunting for the shovel. I have now hidden it all away but means I have to go all the way across the yard to just get my tools (no big deal i know but it is when you are in a hurry in the morning!)

What annoys me about other liveries!??

I am often the last one there and the other night I had to turn ALL the lights off, even ones I had not been using (arena, kitchen, tack room etc) and I had to close all doors and lock up (again not used them)!! Why can't people close doors and turn lights off!??

Not chucking up muck on the heap!! That bugs the HELL out of me!!

Leaving poo in the arena!

Leaving a trail of poo after mucking out and buggering off without clearing it up

Using my tools without asking!

Turning up to find I can't use it cos someone else is!

People feeding my horse hay without my consent

People hacking out without wearing ANY form his hi viz!!!!! MAJOR pet hate!!

Over rugging

Molly coddeling

Lack of common sense

Lack of arena etiquette!!

Know it alls that in fact know very little!!

Putting ground poles in a jump on the wrong side........

hahahah I could go on and on and on........................

Oh god the list could go on for ever! Main ones for me are:

Not throwing muck up the heap.

Leaving yard gates open - they are there for a reason so shut them.

Leaving stable doors open to swing in the wind

Leaving lights on

Borrowing my new broom because it is better than theirs - buy your own!

Moaning about winter grazing - most yard owners do their best, grass doesnt grow in winter and land has to be looked after. Some turnout is better than none.

Moaning about summer grazing and too much grass!

I can think of others but will stop there!

Oooohhh - definitely leaving poo in the arenas and hoping "someone else" will clear away - argh - we've been given a nice surface so why not clear up after yourselves

Hacking out without hi-vis is a good one too

Not sweeping up outside there stables if everyone did there'd be no mess and it doesn't take long!

Not putting enough bedding down so there's a pile of p*** that me and horse have to walk through to get to our stable.

Helping thereselves to feed and rugs etc thinking there spare if there on your stable door,

I am so glad I don't have horses in livery. The more I hear about livery yards the more grateful I become that we have our own land.

Really feel for folk who have their property, horses etc abused, and are having to pay for the privilege. Must really take the gloss off of horse keeping.

-People who don't seem to care about their horses and never turn up.
-Know it alls.
-Taking my thing's and then not putting them back, or damaging them.
-People who Mon-Fri turn out at 6am but then expect their horse to stand in the stable until 11am on a weekend with no food.
-Giving treats to my horse.
-Not clearing up after themselves.

Our livery yard isn't too bad, no one really borrows/ takes anyone else's stuff everyone tends to just use their own.
Annoys me when people don't sweep up in the barn in their area also when they have been jumping and leave poles and wings all around the school (rule is if you use it you put it away after)
The most annoying thing is the bitching and causing trouble for the sake of it (Not everyone might I add- one individual, think they get a kick out of it)

I'm not even on a livery yard as such, and try to keep myself to myself, but people still try to draw me into yard politics!

And tell the YO about the day my horse napped with me (apparently he tried to sit down)- they were watching me from their field. The point of that is...?

I try not to concern myself too much with what other liveries do/how they manage their horses as ultimately, although I may have an opinion on it, it's nothing to do with me.

Sharing a yard with others will always have it's challenges though!

My pet peeves are -

Not lifting poo from the arena - I've lost count of the times I've had to pick up other people's horse droppings - even worse are the ones who fill the poop scoop, realise the poo bin is full and then rather than do something about they just leave the scoop full of poo and someone else has to deal with it.

Abandoning wheelbarrows on the muck heap track - I have some nice bruises from the last time I ran into one in the dark.

Not shutting the gate.

Not taking a turn to fill up water buckets in the field - especially in winter when the hose is frozen and you have to transport water down the field in containers.

All relatively minor and nothing that a polite reminder won't fix.

I'm lucky that my stable is separate from the main block so I barely see most of what goes on which means there is less to bother me! :D

Now i don't mind people borrowing my things such as shaving forks but when i have to spend 10 minutes going around the yard looking for them and even worse when i find them broken!

This! Happened at my last yard. Brand new wheelbarrow...literally only a month old if that and someone borrowed it and then dumped it near the hay so that when the YO brought more in the dark, they ran my barrow over and bent it out of shape!!! No on ever owned up to that one! I was soooo mad!

I also don't like:
- Those who offer opinions on EVERYTHING to EVERYONE even when its not asked
-People not ringing the YO for more haylage if it runs out, but taking my nets - even though I use hay which is not included in the livery and which I have to buy myself. To me, this is STEALING! And seriously, it only takes a phone call for more haylage to appear!
- People not throwing back the muck heap (we tip our muck into a skip which is removed daily. In the evening, I am usually last to muck out, meaning I have to throw everyone elses muck back before I can tip my barrows! GRRRRRRRR
-People feeding my tubby welshie extra hay 'because she bangs otherwise' - well yes, she bangs because she have learnt that doing so equals more hay!

I am fairly easy going really ( ;) ) and even though the above annoys me, I generally don't comment - except on the welshie stuffing!!

Quite a large collection from the many yards I have been a livery at over the years:

People that never offer to let you ride their horses yet you'd offer yours up on a heart beat. People that are selfish and leave hoof clippings and nails when they tie up outside your stable resulting in a large nail going through your horses foot and an expensive vets bill on a Sunday evening to remove said nail :(

People being really loud and obnoxious or showing off to others. People not riding in flourescent or riding without hats, or doing stupid things. People breeding from mares that have dreadful confirmaiton or manners just because they can no longer be ridden or have a purpose in life. People who would never offer to help you learn your test or offer to put up poles for you in the school yet expect the favour in return. People who would never dream of going with you to a show yet have to take an entourage of fifty if they venture from the yard themselves. People who visit the yard and then let their dogs run riot. People who demand you let them have a third of the menage whilst they have a lesson (or won't let you jump when they school) and then only use up half the space where there are eight people trying to ride in the rest of the school. People who bully you and then take offence when you stick up for yourself and play the martyr. People who are genuinely scared of their horses but would never dream of saying anything so will therefore come up with every excuse under the sun not to ride, from swamp fever to the black death! :) People who slag off my friends left right and centre yet my friends are too damn blind to see or realise this is happening behind their backs and think these people are whiter than white, GRRRR.

I am sure there are things that irritate people about me too. Don't care anymore, just love my horse to death and respect those that respect me. Simples

None of the above.....why? Cos I now have my own yard :p:p I do miss my old yard buddies though... and have probably become fussy and irritating because I can have all my own rules.....but then I can break them!!;)

The yard I'm at is actually very good and there is not a lot that bothers me, most people are mindful of others.

In our block we all sweep up outside our stables so it's always very clean and tidy. I'm OCD about sweeping up outside my stables so get a bit peeved when someone walks their horse out which drops shavings on my lovely swept floor and don't sweep it up afterwards.

But one of my big pet hates is people tipping out water buckets outside their blocks during the winter when it will obviously instantly turn to ice and therefore, putting my horses at risk when I've got to walk them over said ice to get them to their fields!!

I also hate it when the sinks are used to wash out feed buckets and the leftover feed isn't cleared from the sink and blocks the drain.

Also people not turning lights off when they've put them on.

People driving far too fast into the yard. Have nightmares that a horse could be loose and get hit.

People not wearing hi-viz to turn out/bring in in the dark and then look annoyed that you've driven halfway up the road without seeing them.

Wow, quite a lot does actually annoy me!! lol!!

I'm polite but I keep myself to myself.

People leaving a mess at the wash up area and clippings not being swept up.
Jumps left out so difficult to school.
Dogs left to run about so there is dog poo every where, seems like every livery has a dog or two.
Two girls in particular, their horses aren't fit enough for what they do and they are lame so Bute them up and still compete
The list goes on.......

As someone who hasnt had her own horse since being a teen and is about to appear magically on a yard in 2 weeks this is very useful information!

What I am taking so far...

Buy my own sweeping brush

Buy my own shavings fork

Dont steal anyones anything

Always sweep up outside my stable

Wear a Hi-Viz. Like always.

I am enjoying all of these fantastic mistakes that I will no longer have to make! Is there a Guide to Yard Etiquette I can purchase? There seem to be so many areas I am going to mess up on... !

Not sure if this has been mentioned.

  • Not clearing up after the farrier
  • picking feet out and not clearing up after
  • not replacing tie up string after the horse has snapped it
  • emptying water out after the owner has filled it just because a little piece of hay in it (such a waste)
  • leaving tack room door wide open so anyone can go in
  • leaving the main gate open when horses are on the yard
  • next door yard abusing our car park cos they are too bloody lazy to get out and open the gate to their yard.
  • spoilt brats
  • kids out of control
  • horse owners who are so far up their own a££ they can turn themselves inside out
  • friends who you do so much for ( LIST AS LONG AS A 4 PAPER) THEN STABS YOU IN THE BACK
  • shares who don't mind their own business with your horse and then stab you in the back

Expecting yard owner to clear up after them. (me)

I would be like the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang collecting all the kids up and storing them lol

My yard is fab! Yes there is some bitchiness going on but it's low level and YO is great at keeping it from escalating :) Everyone has their own tools and uses them, everyone is interested in how you get on if you go to a show, people are helpful (I once came round to my stable to find another livery mucking out for me because I was running late!) and we all get on - if we don't we stay civil and keep out of each others way.

The only downside to my yard is the distance (10 miles) from my house!

This takes me back to when I was at a yard... and not in a good way. Luckily for me I now have my horses at home after more than twenty years as a livery; I'd rather eat my own spleen than go back on a yard.

However, my pet hate at the last yard I was on was people who let their dogs crap in my horse's bed after I had mucked out in the morning and left for work. Mostly the yard owner. Really.

As a YO, generally I'm very lucky. All the liveries get on, and everyone is always interested and supportive if you compete. We have no children on the yard and no livery dogs, just mine, but I do tell all the liveries that if my dogs are ever a pain to please say. I think it really helps that we have a compete mix of people from happy hackers to advanced dressage riders, and a range of ages from 18 to 65.

Every livery gets a contract when they come to the yard and this has all the rules in it so they all know what is expected.

Things that have annoyed me in the past and I've sorted is, people not sweeping up after thmselves, not picking feet out when leaving the stable, not picking manure up, leaving lights on. If I see someone doing something I don't like I'll just say 'please can you not....' etc. We send out Newsletters now and again and we'll put little notes in that saying 'Please can everyone make sure they pick their horses' feet out before they leave the stable' etc. Or we'll sometimes do this as a general note on the whiteboard as people don't like to be singled out.

The one problem I do have is people not switching lights off in the morning when it gets light. I hate waste and it REALLY bugs me, it's not hard to switch them oof as they walk past to the muck heap. But again we're sorting this as our electrician is fitting sensors :)

People who help themselves to other peoples' things and never seem to return it...or stealing as I like to call it. My last yard I had rugs pinched, rubber feed buckets, grooming kit, sprays and potions.

I generally get on with everyone so this is really my only gripe

I really like my livery yard but maybe because it is NOT a DIY yard, it is easier for the YO to control?. Sometimes there are minor gripes but then I talk to the YO and she sorts it. People only disappear once leaving the last person to lock up...they don't do it twice as our yard is akin to Fort Knox so takes forever to lock and alarm everything and its not fair to leg it just ahead of someone else! when I was on DIY I found padlocks on tack, gear and feed stopped many an upset!

Bitching and bullying . . . fell foul of this one today. Let's just say I thought 30-odd year-olds were old enough to know better that it's rude, mean and disrespectful to yell at someone in front of the whole yard. Apparently, I was wrong.
