What are kids being taught?!?

I was fence judging today for a mini triathlon and I was doing the timing for the slip rail.

The first class 10 and under 1ft9 went ok but then there was some very nappy naughty ponies bombing off with the poor little kids screaming on their back, poor kids.

One girl who didn't ride her pony very well at all even for 12 had a stop at the first two fences but got around then her little brother took him around who was 6 and he got a clear and was obviously very chuffed. The older sister then got in a huge mood with him threatened to hit him and then went and slapped her horse :@ I instantly went and spoke to her mother and she then replied "ohh well he was being naughty"! I then spoke to the child and kindly said she wouldn't like it if her horse smacked her in the face so she shouldn't hit him.

Then for the second class 2ft3 14 and under, this class was going tonnes better no very naughty ponies and one little boy on a 10hh shetland who was 5 got the only clear, Soo cute!

Then half way through the class one wizzy little pony got to the slip rail and almost jumped it so the kid jabbed it in the mouth very hard then booted him on the ribs! She then got off and her pony wasn't standing so she grabbed her crop and whacke dhim on the bum then hit him with her hand across the face! I stopped her and said she wasn't to carry on I then took her pony back to the mother to avoid any more beating and then the mother hit the poor pony!!!

Needless to say she was kicked off the showground and wasn't allowed back to any off our events again! Then she compalined about me!!! :@ But I'm just dreading whats happening to that poor pony now away from the public :(

Some people are unbelievable. I really do think kids who are abusive to their ponies must learn it from their parents or something.

When I was about 11 I used to go to a school friend's house to ride her ponies and one of them ducked out when trying to jump a log in the field then the pony bombed off around the feild not wanting to be caught. It took us like 20mins to catch him and my friend at the time took him back to the stable and started beating him with a schooling whip in the stable :( (she kept her ponies at home). I'd never seen anything like it before. I think her mum and stepdad occasionally hit their animals so assume she thought it was ok.
 
all I can say is good for you! I see this sort of stuff going on all the time at local shows and even pc camp etc. I always wonder why someone in an official position doesn't say something. I wish I had your balls!

my daughter can be a bratt, she did it once on my horses back - threw a tantrum and i yanked her off him sharpish, left her in school crying while i led my poor horse away - kids have choices, horses dont - well done you !
 
some kids are very unfair to thier ponies an dont know how to treat them once i saw a little girl kick her pony in the head cos it kept eating grass!!!
 
I normally don't have the guts but I couldn't just let that kid beat the poor pony! I must admit I don't think I made a difference to them at all and I bet they went home and beat the poor pony atleast she didn't win any rosettes!

I feel like I could do it again now though :)
 
Sadly its not just the kids either! Last SJ comp I did there was a girl in her twenties on quite a nice mare but she got 3 stops at the first fence. From my point of view it was entirely her fault she had loose reins, was flapping and the horse didn't look particularly comfortable in the show environment. She promptly burst into tears going "why are you doing this to me" followed by the poor horse getting six of the best, coming out of the ring she walloped the horse again. Cue horse getting even more wound up and distressed. Luckily at that point someone intervened. Just aswell, my non horsey OH was horrified and about to go and sort her out himself!! Maybe its my age but I don't understand why people get so wound up about a ribbon and a piece of cardboard. Its supposed to be fun! :rolleyes:
 
If the parents have that attitude, then it is not surprising that the children behave like that. Well done on you for doing something about it.

I remember one girl at a tetrathlon having trouble getting her pony to stand still whilst she remounted after the slip rail (she had otherwise gone clear) and then proceeded to smack her pony after she got back on. Parent just explained it by saying "Oh, well, she was a bit upset" but thankfully the DC was made of sterner stuff and gave her a telling off.
 
Bl@@dy hell, that's terrible. Good on you for stopping her, nasty little cow. What are the parents thinking when they allow that kind of behaviour?
 
There are still a lot of good kids out there with good attitudes to horses, horsemanship and competing but I have to admit recently I have been a bit taken aback by some attitudes I have witnessed.

The pony or horse seems to take the blame for everything, and they have no compunction in selling or trading the animal on and then recreating the problem with the next one never once stopping to think that maybe they need a few lessons to help them improve. And, girls old enough to know better being obsessed with placings at little local shows ffs.

Unfortunately not because (and I know I keep going on about this) they do not spend long enough going to a good RS before doting parents, who know about as much about horses as they do about camels, buy them a pony and then leave them to get on with it, thinking that darling child knows all that there is to know about horses, so if anything goes wrong it must be the pony's fault. Grrrrr!
 
OH MY GOD that is so bad!!! Half the time it is the riders fault, cant go blaming the pony!

I went to a hunter trials and ODE recently and did notice the very overly excessive use of a whip and legs (with spurs) when a horse was frightened and wouldnt move on...
 
God, if I behaved like that, my pony would be sold so fast I wouldnt know what hit me!

These kids dont know how damn lucky they are to have these opportunities. I'd give my right arm for a horse!
 
OP well done for doing the right thing.

Making things unacceptable in public does, slowly, make them less so in private too. E.g. now we have the smoking ban I think far fewer parents smoke around their kids at home than did whilst I was growing up.

Glad that you're standing up for decent behavior.
 
Well to lighten the mood, I saw something when I was fence judging at a local RC hunter trials a couple of years ago that really made me smile and restored my faith in kids... Child aged about 12 I guess on a black pony of about 14hh. Fairly nondescript pony (but one of those worth their weight in gold!) ridden in a plain eggbut and cavesson. Very one paced but just kept trundling on - girl rode beautifully and every jump was greeted with 'good boy Trevor' and 'Well done Trevor' and a big pat.

She clearly loved him to bits and they obviously had a great bond - it really brought a smile to my face.

A total contrast to the zippy coloured that was well over the top (due to rider thumping it with her spurs and socking it in the teeth) which dumped its rider. I caught her pony, she came over and started laying into it. Was speedily told to pack it in, learn how to ride and calm down!!
 
Grrrrrrr, I think kids are getting far to removed from reality and some think that it is their god given right to do as they like.

My own 4 year old is just as guilty though, I know she will not ever do it again though. Yesterday I turned my back and caught her jabbing her pony in the mouth with its bit, I asked where she had seen that done ( she told me at a show) so I gently pulled her mouth and asked if she liked it much, and she told me ' no it made her cross', I explained that it did the same to the pony and if it, bit, kicked her then it would be her own fault.

She instantly went up smothered the pony in kisses said sorry and prmised never to do it again, she was soo upset I know she will not.

It makes me soo mad to see kids do this ( an adults), and she is on a warning that if I ever see her do it agsin she will not have a pony or ride until she can prove she is reasponsible enough to be trusted again.

Another reason why I will not allow her a crop
