What are peoples ideas on Head Camera's? i know lot of people these days are buying them, yet i have only seen the cameras able to be rented from big competions such as BE not at any more low key competions? correct me if i am wrong. Those of you who compete at a more low key level would you be interested in renting a head camera for the day whilest out competing? or would you be more interested in buying your own?

Personally I don't see the point of headcams so not interested in renting nor in buying. I find a video'd round much more interesting from a learning point of view as well as to watch if it's someone else riding.

I saw them to hire at an event but there wasn't much difference between the hiring price and the cost of buying one. Ended up buying one but have used it more for skiing - I find it faffy to turn on at the vital moment at the start.

I would be interested in using one for playing horseball, I think it would be a useful addition to training and refeering.

And would def prefer to hire one first!

I've always been a bit disappointed when watching a XC round, because the rider is generally looking over the jump you only see the jump when the horse is quite away from it and then you don't see the jump anymore just the view moving up and down again, if you know what I mean.

why dangerous, mine is so light you don't notice its there?

They are very useful to see what may have happened leading up to a situation. I used mine to review how I approached a fence at Belsay last year as I thought there were too many people standing around and the judges cars were directly on the landing side of the fence and as it was a drop looked really confusing. was good to go back and look at it to see if I'd seen correctly.

I wear one xc and it just clips onto my hat. In the event of falling off it would just ping out and off. It's operated with an on / off button on a wrist band so when the starter calls me 10 seconds I can press and it beeps so I know it's recording.
From a training point of view I found it very useful. I did two BE100's last season, first one clear but see loads of time faults. Second one I had one stop but just a few time penalties. I watched both videos and picked 4 similar sections of 30 seconds over both videos and counted the strides. In the first video (mega time faults) I did average of 50 strides per 30 seconds and in the second one (few time faults) I did average 55 strides per 30 seconds. I also took a black flag route on the second one. It's helped me to learn the speed I need to ride at when doing 100's. I'd like to do a Novice by the end of the season so again I'm hoping it will help me.

I'll try and suss out how to link my video to this post but on my phone at the minute.

Sussed it ! This is BCA mega time faults :biggrin3:

And this is what it's like if I'm not using the camera eg xc schooling. So doesn't really distract the over all appearance.

What if you fall head first on to the side that the camera is on?

If you have read anything at all about the MS skiing accident you may be aware that the most likely cause of his helmet being ineffective was the camera on it and neurologist are seeing more severe injuries in any accident where a camera is attached to the helmet.Food for thought maybe!!!!

I think I'd like head cams more if they attached to the front of the hat in a band, so it wasn't sticking out. There's a scuba mask that has integrated HD video recording without compromising the size of the scuba mask, so I'm fairly sure that this isn't an impossible task!

I like them, I enjoy watching video footage from them, but I think the next step in their development is to move on and work out how to make something that is a more 'smooth' addition to the actual helmet. I think Al would wear one though even without that but PC won't let you and the majority of her eventing is done through the PC at the moment.

Rent one??

No I brought one and a dash Cam, I would not be without one now.

The point in my opinion is they are crucial in the event of an accident where you need proof a vehicle or human, plays a part in an RTA with a horse or a near miss. Otherwise its hear say your word against theirs

Depends how his was fixed to his helmet is also something to consider. My 'bracket' in the pictures is attached to the hat by velcro. I have just bought a lighter headcam which attaches to a band again with velcro which goes around the hat.

Sadly there are always going to be tragic accidents where a piece of equipment may or may not added to the injuries. We would never do anything risky if we worried to much about the what ifs !

Both my instructors have watched my videos (and taken the mickey) and have given helpful comments on something I did do or should of or didn't. I'll keep on wearing mine as long as BE allow.

I thought BE were being stupidly difficult about allowing competitors to wear cameras on the XC, saying something like you have to gain permission each time and any footage belongs to them so technically you can't post the footage on You Tube or anywhere else. ??
Well they own rights to any footage shot at BE events anyhow photographic or video!

MM - you email them, they email back a consent form which you sign. You return signed form and they then sign and return and that form is valid for the whole season. Sounds long winded but it was all back, forth and signed off in a couple of days.

The footage 'belongs' to BE so you can't make money out of it - mine are so not interesting enough to sell :wink3:

AF that was amazing! And probably the only way I would ever get around a BE100 xc course!

Aww, thanks :) its quite funny that you can hear me knock the beak off the chicken at fence 4!

I have some of me doing the Novice at Hopetoun and Belsay, if you'd like to see it, send me a PM.

Carefreegirl and ArticFox - where did you attach yours?

mine is a small camera which sits on the middle of my head although I have just upgraded to a HD camera which fits like Carefreegirls does.

please ignore the idiotic look I'm doing!!

What make and model is yours??

the one on the front is a Veho Muvi camera - cost about £40. I had to make the thingy on the front sit permently at a downward angle and tape it, but you can't tell (with a bit of foam wedge and black tape) and it works well. you can see it in the image above

I have just upgraded to a contour HD camera, its having its first outing next weekend so will keep you posted!

I found it very straightforward. I do ask the organisers at every event for permission too but again, its not difficult.

Aah thanks for explaining. If I get back eventing, I might need to try this as we've got a few Go Pro's sitting about :)

I used a Go Pro Hero on my chest out hunting last season, it worked really well. Maybe you can see more neck and ears than most might like, but I liked the results.

(it isn't that blurry, its the steam from the horses under the trees, it clears again later!)

I've got a Go Pro and was thinking of trying this. Figured it would give a better view and would be safer. How do you attach your's?
