OK, I am still learning all the possible qualifiers, festivals etc etc when it comes to British Dressage... so I thought I would ask on here rather than trawl through my already well worn BD rules book

What are the area festivals exactly?

Last wee Grace got 65.83% in P17 and today she came 4th with 64%... does this mean we have qualified for the Prelim area festival. If so, what the hell do I do now, what do I send in and where do I send it???

Yes I think you have qualified as you have got over 60% in two tests. You have to send the tests with your entry to the secretary , you can't do area festival and regionals at the same level and you can't do area festival if you have done champs at that level ,I think

They are a final and also qualify for the winter championships which are held in the spring not sure how many qualify. You also get a plaque depending on your percentage bronze/silver and gold[ well they did at the one we went to a couple of years ago. They are really nice and not so professional

To qualify for the 'regionals' you have to win two classes with a certain % or more (one must be a qualifier test shown in the schedule book as example: P17WQ), you then enter your nearest 'regional' (again listed in the schedule book) and the first 3 - 5 (depending on number of entries in the class) go through to the 'championships' for either the winter or summer series, any BD member can try this route including all the top boys and girls, the title being for example ' Prelim National Champion'

The area festival is similar the the 'regional' but is targeted towards the amateur rider only, again the first 3-5 (not sure on that bit) qualify for the championship, it is held at the same time as the above championship but it has a different title, Prelim Area Festival Champion'.

Hope that makes sense...

The top two from each Area Festival qualify for the Area Festival Final, which - though a separate competition - is held alongside the Winter Championships in April.

For Prelim the rider must be a member to ride at an AF but the horse can still be unregistered. However, if going forward to the AF Final, the horse must be registered.

Look out for some news in the next few weeks about the AF finals at Prelim and Novice. There will be more opportunities for more riders to attend in April.

Not quite correct SpottedCat - the info in the link is not accurate re the rider membership,

Rule 141 - Area Festivals

Sub para f)
Non members may qualify at Preliminary level in Preliminary classes that are in the Omnibus schedule. They must be a Group 7 or 8 rider when qualifying ie. not have won points at Elementary level or above since 1st April 1994. They must however join British Dressage before entering the Area Festival.

and sub para h)
Horses/ponies need not be registered to enter an Area Festival at Preliminary level but must not have more than 37 points when qualifying. All must be fully registered by the Festival Final.

"Area Festival" refers to the competitions held Jul - Sep. "Area Festival Final" refers to the competition held in April.

Just rang BD who confirmed this - how completely ridiculous - non-members don't have a rule book so how on earth are we meant to know if the info on the website downloads is wrong?! They are changing it as I pointed out that it was wrong.

What a shame, I had qualified but am not a member, won't be joining just for that as there is no way we would make the finals, just wanted to do the areas as there is one literally 10 minutes away.

Thanks everyone... I am going to do the area festival at Myerscough in August and see how we get on I think. I was going to give it a miss this year as she has only just affiliated, but then though, "Why not!"
