I think the best bit about BSJA is that you get to jump over consistently well built courses, on good ground and that the scope for progression is far greater than at unaff which tends to stop around 1.10m.
Having said that lots of unaff shows are now making their own qualifiying series' and championships to aim for.
Theres also the trailblazers series, which I gather is an inbetweeny of the two.
well it depends on the quality of the unaffiliated shows around you.... if you have unaff shows around you run by the same people as run affiliated, then they will be similar, usually better jumps in bsja, but apart from that, just that you can win money & have bsja winnings & major shows to go to & a bit of insurance.... they do give the full benifits on the website... but yes it aint cheap !
It might be different in different area's but around here unaffil show jumping is w**k!!! Badly built courses, wrong srides etc.
Also unaffiliated is only small and it doesn't really mean much if when selling a horse you say "won and placed unafilliated" but if it has some money on it's card it actually means something.
Yes, I think that the consistent, properly built courses are a bonus...altho I'm sure that some bsja venues still build bigger than others, even tho you see them going round with their rulers...
I think the most important thing about BSJA is the distances and the better made jumps. They have to stick to all of the safety rules, some of the unafilliated shows use jumps that are falling apart, and some jump horses and ponies in the same class.
They build proper courses. Ive been to some absolutely horrendous unaffiliated courses - squint (not even dog-leg) lines, crazy striding etc. Now that I do more BSJA and far less unaffiliated, I notice how bad unaffiliated is even more!! Dont get me wrong, sometimes they're fine as it depends which course designers they use.
BSJA is way more expensive but now I find it a pain paying for unaffiliated with no hope of any prize money at the end!
