My mare being in foal??

This is the story so far.... My girlie 'Lia' went to stud on the 10th of June, she was brought into season and AI'ed late June, scanned @12 - 14 days and no sign of a foalie

The stud tried to bring her back into season but couldn't, she had 1 very weak season but not enough to AI again so i decided to bring her home and call it a day, that was the first w/e in August.

Well on Saturday i was grooming her and noticed she has changed shape, i got my friend/YO to have a look as she has bred a few foals, knows her stuff and also knows Lia very well!
She thought she looked as though she was just beginning to show 'in foal'

The only thing i have noticed about her general health/behaviour is that she is drinking loads, 3 buckets a night were as before she only drank about 1 bucket, if that!

So what do we all think?? Is this really possible working on the timescale and the fact the vet scanned her and was positive there was no follicle.
I don't have any pic's to post i'm afraid, its too dark in the evenings to get any pictures that would be clear enough as its only a very slight change.

I am loathed to call the vet out just yet as the change is so very slight, so thought i'd ask you all first!

I have just bought a wee foal kit - was £18 and will give a result provided your mare is over 120 days
Am still waiting to catch my mare peeing so she can take the test!

I'm not certain but i think i heard that the pregancy hormone in horses is different to humans and is not 100% reliable to test with a human pregancy test.
But honestly arnt certain and will happily stand corrected on that.
Out of interest, how will you collect the urine? Are you planning to follow your mare around with a bucket for hours? LOL

Yes, I don't think a human test will work....we are a different species after all!

The wee-foal website is full of handy hints on collecting urine....they recommend using an empty juice bottle by cutting the bottom off, turning it upside down and attaching it to the back of your horse's rug so that the wee will drop into it.. EEEKKK! Yeah, mare will be dead impressed if I tried that!
Indeed, I will be following her around with a bucket, resigned to the fact that I'm going to get wet...

and i shall let you know (when my kit arrives) how i get on!

I can see some very early mornings coming on as i am much more likely to catch wee in the morning, she doesn't wee in the evenings, difficult mare that she is!!

Fingers crossed for you, she is a little devil

Going to think of you trying to catch her wee, Saf is so easy always pees in a bucket as soon as she goes back in her stable, bless her

Don't want to be a wet blanket but I gather that the urine tests are notoriously unreliable. Also believe that a negative scan by vet is not always reliable - "if its positive its always positive if its negative its not always negative!". Rather than spending £20 on a Weefoal why not get the vet out or take her and get her scanned so that you know one way or the other? I don't think I coul bear the suspense otherwise!!!

Tried the human one on my mare just to see and no it don't work on mares, she had 2 weeks to go and produced a lovely foal but wasn't preggers according to the test.

I looked into this a bit when a rumour went around here that a local breeder (& a bit of a fly boy, who would know all the dodges!)had boasted to someone that he DID use the human pregnancy tests successfully on his mares, thereby saving bags of money. (However he could perfectly well have been fibbing- that would be in character.)

I found that if the human test can be used it should only be effective within a certain time (from about 6 weeks until about 16 weeks?) when the mare is producing (?)eCG.

This meant that it was too late for me to try it on my mare, and I didn't breed mine at all this year- but all being well I'm going to try it out next year- AND the nail trick, if I can remember how it works- in the spirit of (un)scientific enquiry....

Let me know if it works! Mind you I usually have mine scanned anyway mostly use AI. No problems now big hairy bellies and the steady waddles and only occasional low level bucks are giving it away!
