Just wondering what the options are for a rig. One of my horses is out on loan a 10yo standard shetland gelding so we thought. He is having a scan and bloods tuesday and i am just wondering what are his options if he is a rig?

Is there any procedures are they costly ect..

many thanks

The Horrid one is very riggy (although I've never had him tested). He shows full on stallion behavour and will mount mares given half the chance
When I first got him I put him streight onto Rig Calm. It's amazing stuff. I had to be careful when feeding it as where I kept Herbs when I first had him they had a colt that they wanted to use for breeding. (It's that strong I had to make shore the colt never had any ;) )
I'm not shore about any procedures though as I've never looked into having anything done. Would deffinatly recomend Rig Calm though. :D

Thanks il mention that to his current loaner! i feel awful as if i have lied to her about him, but when i had him he was a dream but he was with geldings, now in a field of mares hes mounting everything and has not settled in and its been 3 months i feel so sorry for him hes had such a rough time put through auction having phneumonia ect.. just wish it would all go away so he could be happy . i put him on loan to a massive farm with loads of land and a thought he would have had a better life. I just feel like its never ending sometimes.

((((((hugs))))))) Don't feel bad you didn't lie. How were you to know. They didn't tell me Herbs was riggy when I bought him but then again they may not have known as he lived on his own in the owners back garden. (Although I do have a feeling they did know as it was obvious he had been doped for the viewing :( )
Herbie is so stalliony he will even attack geldings he has to live in a field on his own. He will only live with a mare if it's in season then he spends the whole time mounting it
As I said don't feel bad you are doing the best you can for the poor chap, It sounds like he's had a rough time and you thought this would give him a better life, how were you to know this would happen.
I hope you manage to get him sorted. xx

Rigcalm ??

My last horse was a rig, although I didn't know it until he tried to kill an elderly mare he had been grazing with for two years. Literally wanted her out of the herd, and it took four people to get him off her, and she was badly injured. Vet tests confirmed it - I thought he might have had a brain tumour it was that bad.

From then on, he was kept on his own.

If he is a true rig with retained testicle this will be proved by the tests, you may have to consider having the op to remove it as there are possible health implications.
If he is just riggy in behaviour, supplements may help otherwise he needs removing from the mares really for a quiet life for all involved.

A friend of mine bought a two year old with only 1 testicle. After phoning around he got the op done for approx £600, yes she got it although it was only small but the op went well etc. A couple of months later he sold the horse. He was still displaying stallion like tendancies and after a blood check it was found that he was still a rig. There isnt a moral to this story, but if the horse does have a retained testicle it would need to be removed fully!
