what are the symptoms of....

A huge range of signs, any combination of which you may see....

-Disuniting in canter
-Reluctance to move freely forward
-Nappy to leg or just generally nappy
-Refusing jumps
-Throwing awkward jumps
-Trailing hind legs on flat and/or over fences
-Reluctance to walk up/down hills
-Reluctant to work in a rounded outline
-Dropping a hip or being reluctant to pick up a hindlimb
-Wonky, 1/4s in or out in any pace
-A reluctance to engage behind- direct transitions become difficult and the horse cant cope so easily with lateral work
-Resistance in the bridle- may come out as unacceptance of contact, uneveness of contact, unsteady head carriage
-Bucking, broncing, leaping and rearing (one or all!)
-Inability to gallop properly

Some horses show virtually no signs

well its just every so often when saddle is put on he goes really funny his back legs come right underneath him and hard to explain but he sort of goes quite rigid and bit shaky. no other symptoms fine to ride and not lame or anything is just a hack at mo, did jump other day and was fine, but he does hav a lump on back just behind back of saddle.

Cold backed probably. Don't panic unduly. I've seen a pony almost collapse sometimes, but be perfectly ok to saddle and mount other times. Be gentle and considerate, don't plonk the saddle on and ram it back, or yank up the girth.

Have you had his back checked? I always get my boys done regularly, you may not notice anything, but better safe than sorry.
Had both done last week, thought big one was ok, but found he was on 3 tracks (rather than 2 when trotting up). His pelvis was out he obviously did whatever caused it recently as it hadn't caused any stiffness through his back yet. Got him straightened out and now trot up is much much better.

I would get backs done every 6 - 12 months if I thought all was well as a preventative measure. More often if there is a known problem.

well thing is hes my mums old horse (she passed away last year) so i am looking after them all (5) even two of my sisters as she has lost interest which leaves me paying for all bills. i hav two of my own so cant afford lots of vets fees etc. he is on lease for 30 a week to a lady down road. not sure what lump is but not under saddle area.
