They feel like veins, they don't bother him and he has had them a good few weeks. I thought they were bites at first so didn't pay much attention. When you push them they dissapear for a few seconds and then gradually come back out.
They are just behind his girth on both sides (only one on the left side) so obviously girthing him up has caused this but I don't know whether or not they should be a concern.
They don't get any bigger with the pressure of the girth, there is no heavy pulse but they are squishy like a big vein feels.
I have tried googling it but 'enlarged veins behind the girth' brings up a whole host of somewhat interesting material but nothing to do with horses!
I have read about varicous veins but not really anything about them in horses. I know they are caused by the vein being overworked so maybe this is what they are as when he is girthed they are having to work extra hard to pump the blood back to the heart... but he isn't girthed up all the time and I never girth up really tight.

Symptoms Of Girth Galls
A swelling or small lump in the girth or harness area resulting in discomfort for the horse that if left untreated can develop into an open sore.

He's an RID but is pretty veiny when he is warm. That pic was after he had been stood in his stable all day though and they don't change after work which i would expect from a vein. I have dealt with girth galls before and they don't feel like that and they arent changing at all. It isn't an area that pinche,s i would expect to see a gall in an area where the skin is aggravated by the girth but it sits behind the girth and there is nothing to cause chaffing or rubbing by pushing and pinching the skin....
I can prod them to my hearts content and he never flinches, he is a huge wet so would definately protest to this if they hurt. They feel exactly like a vein, my friend has renal failure and has a fistula in her arm for transfusion and it feels like that but without the mega pulse...

If they were fatty lumps, wouldn't I be able to kind of grab hold of them (if you know what I mean?)
I foudn that article too and they are moe like hard lumps... They aren't round on my lad, they are tubular...

My mare has exactly these too! I have no idea what they are but in the 10 years I've had her they've caused no problems.

I wouldn't say I overgirth, quite often I have the other problem as i don't tighten it enough. He is ridden in an humane girth too... Do they cause pain etc? Is there a way to get rid of them?
