Oooh will watch this thread with interest. School mine for about 20 mins 3 times a week, hack out about 3 times a week for 1-2 hours and have a lesson once a week. We are doing unaffiliated prelim level dressage once or twice a month and thinking about trying our first show at the end of the month...maybe! Have attached a pic of my boy in action.
Not mine, daughters. Did mainly lr last year, this year done first ridden, equitation, handy pony etc at local shows. First prelim in a few weeks, doing small courses but clear in a nice consistent canter. Usually lunged once a week in side reins, jumped once & hacked 3 times. However no school so lunging & jumping dependent on ground, sometimes 2x jumping when grounds good. Always school on hacks, which on average are 1&1/2, longer at wkend. Will do some light hunting this season. And some more unaffiliated prelims & small sj, & xc schooling. Next summer whatever daughter fancies, probably jumping & gymkhana rather than dressage. Then spring she rises 7 break to harness & maybe do novice driving trials or leisure level scurry driving. Might find a small jockey to ride her but at 11.1 & a second pony type driving will probably become her main job.
Mine was rebacked this summer and is getting used to the basics still. Hoping to do a prelim next month but definitely missed the dates for Burghley young event horse ;p
I'm in no rush with him though. Hope to do a lot of dressage with him, working hunters and show classes. Possibly a bit of eventing, but dressage is my main aim.
OH is schooling his mare about 5 times a week, hacking once a week, done a bit of jumping at home slowly going to build up to doubles and fences with fillers, she's jumping about 50-60cm at the mo. Take her to 2 unafiliated prelims. Not really got major plans for her, just see how she goes
My lad gets ridden 6 times a week, schooling and hacking. Been doing unaffiliated but in 2 weeks he will go affiliated prelim dressage and he has also done several ridden shows.
Never got below 1st or 2nd place, VERY pleased with his progress.
Just started jumping so will go to Winter SJ league and aim to do first XC next spring.
I have two 5yr olds, my 17.1hh ID gelding Troy has been turned away to mature some more as he is still such a baby in so many ways. The great thing is he is such a laid back dude and really easy to bring back into work.
My other gelding Charlie, 14.3hh WB x is currently being wasted in the field. Last year he was schooling away lovely, great on hacks and had been to a couple low level shows just to get him out and about. He can be quite difficult though and needs ridden 6 days a week with a strict routine or he becomes the pony from hell to ride! lol Not had the time for him this year but plan to get him back into work next year.
Bee's a bit different, as she raced last year, and so was rebacked in May so missed her 4yo year.
She's done a few little SJ shows at 60cm or so, and will start doing 70cm next time she's out. She's been cubbing and will go again, and maybe go hunting a few times as well. She's gone XC schooling twice, and loved both times. Went to her first dressage yesterday and did Intro A (61.8%, 3rd) and Prelim 1 (65.8%, 3rd). She might do an ODE (60cm) in 2 weeks time.
She's lunged once a week, does a jumping/ flat work session once a week and has a lesson once a week and is hacked the other days. Al's careful not to push her, but she loves working and is very keen! Her aim for the 6yo year is to be going nicely at BE90/ PC Novice. She's a young 5, having only just turned 5 a month or so ago.
Mine gets ridden about 4/5 times a week. He gets lunged once a week for about 30 mins, I hack him alone once a week for upto an hour, he normaly hacks twice a week in company around about an hour & if he gets ridden a 5th day he normaly does some schooling.
I wanted to be out & about doign a little bit by now on him, but we have had a couple of set backs so going to keep doing what I am doing & get him ready for next year. Also plan on starting lessons when I have a bit more dosh
Mine is schooled or hacked for 40 mins 4 times a week and lunged 2-3 times a week so has 1-2 days off. she has a lesson once a fortnight and goes jumping once a month or cross country schooling every so often. did intro and couple of sunaffiliated prelims last year. is not an easy mare so we are concentrating more on schooling this year.
My 17hh 5 year old is being schooled and hacked few times a week, started a bit of jumping nothing great, he has done a 2ft jump x course and gone over a few small logs too. Still taking it easy on him as he gangly and don't want to stress his joints etc.
Don't have 5 year old at the mo, but would normally be taking them out and about doing a few dr shows at Prelim and Novice; 3 is for breaking, 4 is for establishing, 5 is for starting "proper" work, 6 is for specialising (which is it going to be: a dressage/jumping/hunting/hacking/all of the above horse, or none of the above, which of course then = sold horse
I'm about to buy a 5yr old and will have no saddle for a while. Also he and I are not match fit so plans are to start groundwork on long reins and get him to relax around scary stuff (again in hand) then we'll be working on building some muscle as he is big up front but not as well developed at the back. Plan is working 5x a week in the school for max 15 mins on the long lines or til I get tired in hand, until I'm happy that he trusts me, then we will start to hack out at a steady pace for an hour or so at the weekend. When I am fitter we will do a bit more. No hurry for me!
Mine is being ridden 6 days a week, a mix of schooling and hacking with very occasional tiny jumps. We've been to prelim dressage and rc showing and a few little fun shows on site. She's seen hounds at a meet too, and we box out to hack. We have a lesson once a fortnight. Plan to do a bit more dressage over winter, and take her cunning. We'll try a bit more jumping at home too.
I am running my five yr old round his first BE event this weekend. He will then SJ and dressage a bit over the winter with a view to do a full year of BE in 2013.
Poppy has only been in regular work since July, having been backed and hacked a bit and then turned away for a while, so we are a bit behind some others.
We are schooling about 3 times a week, one of those a lesson, a lunging session and an inhand hack once a week, she hasn't seen too much of the world, so we are starting slowly. Hoping to do our first intro test next month and see how she takes to it
My 5yo is an ex-racehorse so taking things quite slowly. At the moment he usually gets lunged once a week for 20 mins, two 30 minute(ish) flat-schooling sessions and three longer (45mins-1 hour) flat & jumping sessions as he lacks confidence over poles etc so needs plenty of practice! Coming into autumn/winter we will hopefully be swapping one of the longer sessions for a competition at the weekend. He gets one or two days off each week depending on how busy I am. I'm trying to take things easy with him and let him tell me when he is ready to take it up a step
Mine has done 1 BE80 and 3 BE90's. He has been placed 2nd twice, 7th and 8th, so a pretty impressive record IMO! We have a few more BE90's planned for this season. Over the winter we will do some BD and BS, and also the winter BE competitions. Next season the plan is 1 or 2 BE90's then move up to BE100.
Weekly routine wise he hacks 3 times a week, has a flatwork session, a jumping session, a competition/something away from home and a day off.
My sister 5year old is ridden 6days a week. Hes schooled 3 times, hacked twice (1-2hours) and jumped with the odd lunge (more through winter). Hes done some 80cm clear rounds, this winter plan to do some dreasage, 80cm sj comps and xc schooling with the hope to do a BE80 next season.
My 5 year old is a welsh x appaloosa x tb. He is aimed at a dressage career. He gets exercised 5 times a week. usually 3 schooling for 40mins and 2 hacking around an hour. He has to keep his fitness up or he gets lazy!
This summer we have done a fair few dressage competition. Some unaff some BD. He was doing really well up until aug (getting high 60s to 70) in prelims as we were going for consistancy and plodding around. Have started asking more for him- more forwardness and uphill etc. and because if this, tension is creeping in and consistancy has dropped which means our scores have also. He is schooling at elem level at home - just starting traver and trying to master our simple changes as well as canter shoulder in etc.
My 5 year old is a 14.2hh pony who has only been in regular work for the last 4 months so is a bit of a late starter. He is ridden 5 times a week. He is usually schooled twice for 30-40mins working time (excluding 15mins walking for warm up and cool down) I try and keep sessions short and productive with an emphasis on working forwards into the contact no matter what we are doing. He is hacked twice a week, then the other 2 sessions are either lunging or jumping.
I am aiming for him to have an allround education and to build up his strength slowly. From this month I am going to start taking him out to some clinics and unaf. dressage. By next year he will be competing BD.
