What are you doing with your laminitics today?

Normally, I keep mine in until the frost has gone then let her out at lunch but it doesn't look like melting today! Do you keep yours in or just turn them out for a couple of hours?

Never had lamintis but maybe prone because he is a chunky cob, normally have muzzles on but today I have let them have the field as they are unrugged and live out so needs energy, absolutely freezing here, I am taking a chance but its a balance between being cold and hungry or full and warm, difficult.

We have only thick frost at the moment, so I turn my mare out at lunchtime still wearing a muzzle as I daren't risk it and she comes in between 4-5pm. I soak her hay but the last couple of days the nets have been frozen with ice, I've thought about not soaking it but I'm so scared.

Someone told me my mare couldn't go out in the field if its thick snow as it cuts off the blood supply, is this true?

Yes unfortunately here it's just a sprinkle of snow, so she could still eat loads of frosty grass :-( The others are in because we have treacherous frozen clay ruts, but I cannot exercise them today as I am at work...oh well, I will go home at lunch and make a decision then..thanks for your thoughts :-)

They probably mean the cold constricts blood vessels. I think it depends how susceptible your pony is, Ive always let mine have an hours exercise in the snow without issue.

PS Lotty I have read on here that standing in snow is bad for a laminitic's feet as it restricts the blood supply. I imagine a short time would be OK though?

MIne is out 24/7 at the moment; we've about eight inches of snow, so no chance of getting much grass and the cold doesn't seem to affect her, although I am monitoring pulses religiously twice a day.

Mine normally go out at night into a paddock over the winter (and shut into our big yard during the day) but at the moment I've just let them go out full time with my other horse in the big field. We've got heaps of snow so no chance of getting any grass, they stay down by the yard by choice anyway munching on hay.
