What are you getting the farrier this year?

Nothing - for the last 15 years I have wrapped myself up in christmas paper and he has turned me down - so last year was his last chance!! (Only joking!! :-) )

After the state of my horses feet that made me go barefoot NOTHING.
And when u pay such a high price for shoeing I wouldn't buy anything anyway.

Awww, I love my farrier he's awesome. I don't feel I pay too much at all and certainly don't begrudge him a little something for Christmas :) I'm a right PITA and so are my horses and he's always cheerful and helpful and he even brings the dog because I luffs him too :D

It seems weird to me buying a farrier a Xmas pressie, they are doing their job just like vets, docs, etc etc. Your paying for a service. And to me it doesn't help when they tell you they pay £22 for a pack of 10 shoes than say that's £75 please! I know there's the training bla bla but shoes are a rip off so it would be me who would want a pressie

I don't always buy for him, but if he happens to come around Xmas I do. He may cost a lot, but he comes in alsorts of weather and is always pleasant. Last year we gave them a box of beer.

Usually get him some fizz and a tub of sweets.
However his son has started an apprenticeship with him so I'm likening the idea of a box of beer. How do you decide the brand?

Last year I got my farier a mug "what not to say to a hot, tired farrier" and it had jokey things on it like "can you do an extra 4". He liked it cause it made him laugh.

Have never bought my EP and/or Farrier a present and don't intend to start now, no-one buys me a present for doing my job day in day out and by god it's stressful......bah humbug!

A punch in the face?

Yes, well your farrier probably deserves one so I'll let you off saying that. Or at least some flaming dog poo through his door!

My OH is an engineer and he gets Christmas presents from his clients, I get them from all my reps (scientist) it's hardly unheard of to give someone you work for/with/ receive a service from a gift?

And yes cactus, a lot of people give their farriers a gift. And their milkman. And their paper boy and so on. :)

I have been known to give gifts to vets as well if they have gone above and beyond for me (which my farrier does all the time bless him)

re apprentices. Gosh, I don't know. I haven't had a farrier who takes on apprentices since I was a teenager myself. Umm, beer sounds about right I would reckon.

I once rung my farrier at 7pm on a saturday night and he came out at 6.30 on sunday morning, as competing. He then drove straight to airport to fly on holiday. He didnt charge so I bought him a box of beer. He was so chuffed!

Hadnt thought about it for this year for new farrier, but today he dragged 1 in from a muddy paddock, shod its 1 shoeless muddy foot for free and dragged it back out again. he only charges 55 set plus 10 call out so dont think expensive. He is always early and handles the nags like they were new born children lol. I reckon he may have earnt a small token of gratitude!

I used to whack a tenner on the bill. I don't think I saw him remotely near Christmas last year since nothing has shoes on, and not sure I will this year either :p

Look for the cheapest for the highest number! And if there is a 3 for 2 deal I go for that one, as usefull as spare gifts!! Normally Fosters or Carling are a winner!

Teasle , where did you get that mug from?

I get my trimmer a nice bottle of wine. Don't know if she actually likes wine mind you

I think it's nice to give people a small token of appreciation in the season of goodwill. I also tip my window cleaner, wheelie bin cleaner etc why not?!

Nobody gives me gifts for doing my job though!

Well ........ he's getting a SatNav because he keeps borrowing mine and not putting it back. Some new waders cos his have sprung a leak. Probably something chocolatey. And a few things in a stocking (not me, I find them draughty). I usually have to go into the fishing tackle shop and ask the boys what to get, but there have been so many complaints about wet socks I kinda guessed for myself :D
