following on from a post in SB what are you most scared of when you are riding?

mine is hacking out! it never used to be, where i used to live all you had to do was cross a main road with a horse crossing (like a pedestrian crossing, but the buttons higher up!) then you were on a river estuary, and could go across that to the beach or the common. now i have to cross two main road, no crossings, in rush hour. frankie can be a bit spooky too and he has ran off me once! i cant relax, and in turn he cant relax as much as id like!

i more worried about hacking than jumping! xxx

I'm more worried about jumping at the minute - I daren't jump anything more than about 6inches off the ground! My horse thinks I'm mad! Had an accident a few years ago and not jumped since. I want to BSJA though, so I need to work on my confidence!

Hacking can be quite scary, too, although going out with other people is okay. There are a lot of mental drivers around. our yard goes straight out onto a really busy main road where the cars do +60mph....we could do with one of those horse crossings!

Forgetting the course and looking like a mupet! Still got a hung up about not being able to stop hence never let my horses go or really enjoy going for a blast. But my faith in horses riding out is almost totaly repaired.

Falling off!

Only thing I hate is bolting. I still let the horses I ride go, but if one ever bolts with me I then get really panicky-I always like to know I can stop somewhere

Other then that not a lot

Definitely hacking out. There arent any main roads around but there are hardly any bridle ways so if i ride out its on really narrow country lanes with no verge or anywhere to go if a car comes. Theres also a couple of 'boy racer' types who live just up the road from us who think its 'cool' to rev their engines and race around like bl**dy loonatics. I dont ride out any more because i know sooner or later a car isnt going to see me/ stop in time and i cant take the risk. If i want to hack out we have to drive to a bridle way that's open.

Although im also scared of having a rotational fall xc! maybe im just a wimp

Riding Meg and Chloe I can honestly say that nothing scares me.
However on other horses I guess it's the possibility of them bolting and/or bronco-ing which scares me the most.

Being bolted with, having no control or brakes. If I'm riding something i trust then I don't mind them messing aout / bucking shying etc, but as long as I know they won't dump me or bolt with me.

Mine has to be bolting on the road! Or falling off and the horse peeing off and then not being able to find it.

Got a bit of a fear of harrows now as well as I was very close to falling off on one when Otto tripped over at a local competition centre (yes it was left just outside the gate way and the gate was open), now that would have really hurt!

Oh amymay nice to know its not only me

Actually as I think about it more - it's being scared of a horse slipping over full stop regardless of where I am riding, and landing on me. I have no idea where this has come from. However, the roads around by me are very slippery - so probably eminates from there........

Hmmm, now what show centre in kent is silly enough to leave a harrow lying around......

Done that! It's actually more scarey after the event when you think of what could have happened!

Stallions! I ride my 2 mares out on the moors where there are several of them out loose, havent had any probs yet as I give them a very wide berth. I worry that one may be lurking behind a gorse bush & small tarty mare will instantly come into season (one sniff of an attractive gelding sets her off). Dread to think of the consequences as some of them are quite big, the mini shetland ones look v cute but they come swarming at you like bumble bees from behind the bushes & have heard of horses panicking. Worth the risk though as there are tons of foals out there at the mo & they are sooo cute

The only thing I have a fear of is a horse slipping over. Its how I broke my ankle years ago and its just a niggling fear that has stayed with me. Tis quite irritating actually as nothing else really bothers me at all

I trust my girl 1000%, however I am not keen on hacking out on my own as traffic goes past so fast and I so scared of her getting hurt.

[/ QUOTE ] Aren't all these things though? When horses bold with me on roads I don't think 'crap, crap, crap we've bolding on the road, I have no brakes, what if we slip, what if a lorry comes around the corner....' adreniline kicks in and you think about trying to solve the problem. Then you make you and said horse calmy walk to end on good note but still next time you have that niggling thought of it happening again...

Anything that might hurt me

. But one big fear is going down rabbit holes. Having done it once at full gallop I'm very aware of how much worse it could have been. Just now I'm having a jumping fear, but I am going to get over it

Hacking, especially on the roads! Off road hacking with another calm horse I can just about handle, but there's no way I could hack alone at the moment. I have to cross a busy road (see jumpthemoon's post earlier - we really do need a horse crossing thingy!) to get to the school and that scares me!

I used to be scared of EVERYTHING a few months ago, but am slowly getting better!

stinker stonkers mum - im exactly the same as you! because i am such a perfectionist, and very critical of myself, when people are watching me all i can think of 'oh my god, they must think im crap'
and because im thinking that i cant concentrate and it all goes to pot! xxx

Hacking out!
I never used to worry at all but recently I have become very weary about it, simply due to the increasing amount of idiots there are on the roads now!

Ooo yes, and that one. Going to a professionals yard on Friday to have a look at some rejected eventers with a view to buy. I have butterflies now just thinking about it

You are getting better though - it just goes to show that if you keep on trying and building your confidence up slowly you will get there in the end!

I'm also scared of the horse landing on me if I fall off - you read all these stories in H&H about rotational falls and riders being killed in accidents, it's quite worrying sometimes!
