I have just been to see my friends mum in hospital. The reason she has been admitted is because she was wearing flip flops.
Went to the yard to pick up her daughter was asked if she could take the dope on the rope to the field. Said dope then spooked and trod on her toes.This resulted in her losing the tip of her toe. She now needs to have the exposed bone removed so they can stitch the skin over.This could of been worse if the dope had shoes on.

So steel toecaps all round I think
 
Oh yes, i wince when I see people in soft shoes

My friend broke 3 of her toes last week when wearing flip flops down the yard and her horse with one eye stood on them ouch

but steel toe caps can be just as dangerous i think? may be wrong, some one may be able to expand on this
 
I nearly always wear steel toe caps - I needed to have my foot broken first though to make me think this way!
 
I always wear steel toe caps...same thing, I had to have a hefalump jump on my foot and break it to learn my lesson!!!

Been off work (and riding:( ) for six weeks now due to a freak accident with a gate/ horse. If I hadn't had my steel toe-capped boots on it would have been a lot worse....!
 
It is utterly stupid to wear flip flops or similar when out near horses, it really does make me cringe. I imagine most horsey people when asked to help unexpectedly, to do something so simple, don't think about it.
I am sorry to hear about your friends toe, and hope she is back on her feet soon(

Daughter and I decided to worm neurotic pony tonight. I was wearing trainers and no socks as we had just come in from the beach. Little madam swung sideways and scraped her hoof down my ankle and the side of foot. Cue much swearing and a now very sore ankle slowly turning blue, but we did get the wormer down her in the end

Normally I would have worn boots to do something like this with her but as you say just didn't think.
 
Idiot groom I work with is always wearing trainers about the heavies, aged 4,4,5,20. You think he would learn seeing as the shire "dope on a rope" broke is fingers two summers ago....

I always wear my MH steel toe caps as I've had them stand on me too many times, that and someone bought cheap toe caps, heavy stood on them and bent it down nearly cutting his toes off....

Nothing to what I called myself. I have also heard of a really nasty accident where steel toe caps made a real mess of someones foot but generally I am sure they are the safest option.
 
someone one was saying yesterday that a lady at a yard nearby had been wearing crocs and lost part of her 2nd toe! Not sure if it was the same person or two similar accidents!

I always wear boots just in case! Lost my big toe nail as a child turning my pony out in sandals, learnt my lesson then!
 
I could of done with that warning a month ago

when my horse jumped on my foot when i went out with my slippers on. I ended up in A&E with a hair line fracture in my foot

Steel toe caps are only any good when they are good ones, cheap ones are never as effective when crushed, they will however withstand knocks and scrapes. (boringly i know this due to health and safety thing at work, lad in my warehouse nearly had his toes removed by toe caps as a fork lift ran it over!!!!!)
I always wear my toe caps at yard, after having foot and toes broken in my pretty pink hunter wellies 2 xmas's ago

I went for a walk years ago I must have only been around 7-8yro stopped off at my neighbours horse who was on a public footpath, said mare was always good as gold and very quiet, came over to me but spooked and stood on my foot I had sandals on thankfully only ended up with bruising and scraped skin.
 
I've just been to feed my horse and put his fly mask on in sandals (am dressed for work). I know its lazy and silly and I must admit I did feel really vulnerable. Having had my friend's Welsh D stand on my foot at a show when I was wearing canvas shoes (forgot my boots) you'd think I would've learned!
I will try to remember this warming in future - sounds awful!
 
How timely, less than half an hour ago I caught my daughter in her flip flops going off to turn her pony out and made her put on something a bit stronger... I can't face another trip to A&E at the moment, was there yesterday for the 2nd time in a week due to other daughter with broken wrist, they'd sent us away the first time saying it was probably a sprain. Ha! Always trust a mothers instinct...
 
But why is it though the minute you wear 'unsuitable' footwear the horse decides that is when he/she's going to act an idiot and stamp on your feet? A conspiracy amongst our horses I reckon!

When I was at college one of the girls was wearing steel toe caps and a horse stood on her foot - the steel was crushed into her toes and she was really badly injured

Having said that I did walk across the fields drunk in my flip flops once and got trod on - won't be doing that again

You do have to spend the money and buy good quality steel toecap boots - the cheaper ones will just collapse and can cause horrific injuries. With this in mind I tend to wear heavy boots, but not steel toe caps - partly because I am too lazy to change boots and ride in the same ones I wear on the yard - and most steel toe cap boots are too bulky to ride in.
 
This really annoys me! It states in our yard contract suitable footwear should be worn yet it iss YM who wanders around all day every day in flip flops!! having broken my foot, lost my big toe nail (5yrs later still no toe nail) and nearly my big toe stupidly rushing to turn out in flip flops on way out I'm paranoid!

Don't wear steel toe caps but do wear heavy boots - yes my feet get hot, and I don't look 'cool' but my feet are safe... sorry rant over - this is my pet peeve esp at current yard!!!
 
I always wear a pair of good quality strong leather shoes +
socks regardless of the weather, pretty much whatever I'm doing as you never know what you'll need to do next in our house (we have heavy vehicles, tractors, machinery..)
The only time I really hurt my foot was when indoors I walked into the edge of a plastic box with bare feet and broke a bone in my foot.
 
I was going to answer truthfully and say an ice pack (not from being trodden on I add, taking a flyer) I always feel naked if I haven't got boots on with the horses. Felt strange when we had a party in the field (no horses there at the time) last summer and i had sandals on!

MH steelies for me - having rather large hairies they are essential. Even the most careful horse can have an accident with putting feet in the wrong place.

I did once get caught out. I was just putting a feed into my TB - wearing open toed sandles and one of the kids begged me to catch her jumping pony - I was the only one who could.

I did catch her, but as putting the head collar on, she stepped on my toes - I held in the scream, finished doing up headcollar and handed pony over and then proceeded to turn the air the same colour as my toe. Had the mare not been a little 14.2 TB the damage could have been a lot worse.
 
hmmm after breaking my foot wearing trainers you would think I would be a bit more careful... but I will wear flip flops down the yard if I'm not getting them in, but always take trainers with me to change into if I need to. I broke the upper part of my foot, so steel toe caps or not, wouldn't have made a bit of difference!!
