What are your 4yo's up to?

very jealous of yours jumping! Hunters scared of poles!

Been very lucky with her, she loves jumping but equally doesn't like touching poles! Good luck with Hunter, use the hacking to get him forward off your leg, understanding your aids and importantly trusting you, will help when you eventually start jumping! you can always pop over tiny logs out hacking, great way to introduce abit of jumping :-)

Mine was broken at the start of the year and I've had him since May. He's been in and out of work with various issues such as abscesses, thrown shoes etc but we have taken him to a few low pressure lessons, hacked out and have taught him to go forward off the leg, be round and soft, bend and some baby leg yield. I'm now easing off over winter as he's gone very bum high and will probably just hack twice a week and get him back into proper work next spring.

I love this thread :) Its so nice to hear what everyone else has been doing with their lovely 4yo's.
My little lady is only just 4 (if that according to the dentist on monday) and she a TB from ireland but never raced. She was backed last year and I bought her after she had had almost a year turned away.
She arrived a 6 weeks ago she had 3 weeks to settle with the other mares and we did lots of lunging, groundwork and grooming. We then started ridden work but we have had a couple of napping problems in the school and she had been dragging her back left leg so she is off now until physio has been on saturday. Dentist has been already and her teeth were pretty bad so we just have the back to sort and then we can get going again.
She is incredibly sweet and kind on the ground but she has very little confidence and balance ridden so working on those are my main priority for the winter!
I do have a question though. I know how important hacking is going to be for her in respects of building our relationship and improving her balance and confidence and we have been out a few times with other horses and she was happy upfront and behind and not spooky at all. However it can be few and far between that I have people to hack with so how is the best way to introduce going on our own?
Ooooh picture..... with our friend anne :)

I don't have someone to hack with regularly Ami so I just (accidentally) tried her out on her own as she walks a lot faster than my pony and we had marched so far ahead the pony was completely out of sight and she couldn't have cared less so the next day I went on my own ;). Could you get your hacking friends to hang back and see how she reacts.

We have kind of done that already when being out with the others as she is a lot more forward going than a lot of the others at the yard and she was absolutely fine. So maybe a couple in hand walks and a couple more hacks with everyone else and we will give it a go! We need to be doing it soon though as for me being able to hack is important and for her!

Thanks. I'm very fond of her. She's such a happy little soul :)

Doesn't look like that now though. She really is hairy. I still can't decide whether to clip or not?

Pretty horsey, and looks like she had a great intro to jumping, that's might sort of size (wimpy stressage rider!). Just take her bib out clipping wise if she's getting a little warm.

I'm humming and hawing about clipping mine too. She will just be hacking but living out 24/7 too. Not sure what she will think of clippers either she is rather sensitive.

Went on a nice hack with her today and had our first little canter under saddle :)

Hi all, I've had my 4yo couple mths now - up till the last 4 wks or so we just took it fairly handy, group lessons, bit of schooling and lunging . Past couple wks have been working on her being sharp off my leg and knows when I want her to move away from my leg, lots of transition work, bit of jumping and hacking. Took her out hunting yesterday but was a disaster! 4times the usual amount of people! Defo not a starter hunt at all! So we called it a day. She went well tonight - and in latter half of lesson looking for the contact and working in lovely outline. Plan for winter is to do some winter league dressage and a spot of combined training:)

Thanks Jess. Her mane has highlights and also changes colour lol. She's only been in Scotland 4 ish weeks and was stabled a lot before I got her so she could still hairy yak up a bit maybe:D

Awfully pleased with my girlie today. Yesterday I ran the clippers about a horse length away until she wasn't paying attention. Today I was just going to run them over her body (she was a kicking stamping monster when I got her so was expecting major tantrum!). Ran them over her body, no reaction, belly, no reaction, face, no reaction!!

So I just clipped her and did half her face seeing as she was being so good. She did want to eat the clippers when I did her jaw so I need to tidy her up a bit but I am so pleased with how good she was. (don't laugh at my crap clipping haven't clipped for 10+ years and didn't clip very much then either as you can no doubt tell!)

Donkey!

Unfortunately I have decided to sell my 4yr old due to lack of time / facilites, but he had from July to middle of October off and then started hacking, I took him to the school last week and this was his first first schooling session since middle of July !

http://youtu.be/dgYTltBgcp0

I backed him myself in 2011, then he had time off to grow in the field until Dec 2011 when he started hacking out. Hacked over the winter, then he had a couple of months work then holiday again !

Mine has been slung out in the field and will be there for a few months. She'd been up in work for about 5 months and started to feel it so field it was to be. She's being super chilled (for a change) and I was going to jump on her a couple of Sunday's ago but decided it wasn't worth it. Will attach a photo of her jumping when I remember how to add photos!!

Mine has just started back after some growing pains. He has been lunged alot to build up strength, done some lunge jumping and once under saddle and done a few schooling sessions. Once my schools finished next week he will start getting ready for blue chip quals.

This is him (photo over load sorry)

Can't see the pic aces high :(

Took my girl to see a specialist about her bitting issues tonight. Was very pleased with her behaviour on a busy yard with flapping hens and tractors, forklifts etc working. She loaded to come home like a pro as well. Finally feel sure I've got a good un :D

I have 2 4 year olds.

Dottie is a homebred. She hacks, schools, has been for a dressage lesson off the yard, has jumped a handful of times, has been to 2 clear round baby parties that were only teeny but to trot round. She has been xc schooling once and we are going to the beach on Tuesday :)

Bailey came to live with me 11 weeks ago. I have backed him and he is very sweet. He can go in all 3 paces, will hack by himself, has jumped once, trotted over some teeny xc jumps and is going to see some spooky SJ fillers today. He will then have a week or 2 holiday just to let him relax a bit because this must of all been a whirlwind from him just chilling in the field with his friends.

All being well I will do some baby dressage and SJ with them both over the winter and hopefully go to some little events next summer.

My 4 year old has had the summer out in the field being a child haha!!! he's SO huge (Currently 17.2hh :O ) he just needs time more than anything!!!

I bought him back into work middle-end of september and have increased the work load slowly!

He's now Pessoa'ing once/twice a week and I ride him 3/4 times a week! he is learning VERY quickly and he's brilliant as you literally pick him up were you left him (even after his summer off)

He's also starting a bit of pole work and is learning jumpies!!! hehe

I'm in absolutely no rush with him and don't have a defiant 'plan' so to speak because he is just so big and it's just going to take a longgg time for him to go and mature! but I do have a couple burley young event horse classes in the back of my mind :)

He's a sweet horse and coming along very nicely

I'll add some pics later!!! better shoot late for work haha!!! xx

I really like Barney Jess!

It's really nice hearing what everyone is doing. Mine is very backward schooling wise, but I've only had her a month and have no school so mostly hacking and she has a lot to learn. She can be rather quick to be on two legs if not getting her own way as well. In other ways tho she is great.

Lot of challenges on a new route today. Neighbour came on my pony but the pony refuses to lead with neigbour on board so we have to lead through everything!

Vickijay I love your girl. I don't usually like spotties and odd colours but she is gorgeous.

And Jess, how chilled is Barney?! He's just like ''yeah, I can do jumping. It's not even exciting. I'm just too cool''

Mine went to trot round the clear round last weekend
