What are your absolute "No" points, when buying a horse?

my no's are quite straight forward, no major health issues and no complete lunatics, slight lunatics are fine;) oh and nothing over 16.2hh, i love my 17hh girl but not being able to put her in a trailer is a pain in the butt:rolleyes:

No seriouse health problems, small bucks, rears, bunny hop kind of things can be workerd through but constant full on rearing and bucking and bolting off no.

Also dont mind something with loading/catching problems provided that they eventually load or come in.

I wont have horses that dont catch - it just pisses me right off, or blind panic bolters, obviously a safety issue.
Anything eles I think I can sort out with work.
Health wise, I only buy young now so expect perfect health. I wont buy with a known medical condition, why when I can spend the same and get a horse without?different if ano existing horse develops a condition, then i'd happily manage as i have ano attachment and they are worth everything i have to me :)

Must be good to hack and good to tack up at shows (present horse is almost impossible to tack up at shows unless I have a stable to put him in :D)

Must stand calmly when tied up or being mounted. I have a lot of health issues and sometimes have to tack up from a wheelchair, scooter or crutches, so I need a horse that won't freak out when it comes near.
Luckily even my new ride who had never had a para rider before adapted to having a chair around her feet straight away or I wouldn't be able to keep her (can you tell she did a lovely dressage test today and I love her so much right now?!)

Well my next one will probs be my next 'LIFE' horse since K was my 'YOUNGER YEARS' horse so I pretty much have a restrictive list :)

  • Nothing over 5yrs old or younger than 2yrs old.
  • No TBs, WBs or similar pretty much got my eye on Welsh D's or Connies nothing else, *might* take a cross of either but would have to be able to live out ;)
  • No greys or coloureds
  • MUST pass a vetting
  • no sarcoids/warts/blemishes/vet issues HOWEVER small
  • Unbroken or at the very most backed, would rather green and lightly handled, prefer to do the work myself

Yes pretty specific but Ive collected others 'problem horses' for years and turned them around and this time Id like summat unspoiled that I can just bring on and compete but not be breaking the bank with feeding/hay/bedding etc, done that for years with constant poor doers :)

Rearers are an absolute no.
TB's - sorry to those who like them, but I don't.!
Sweet itch - again an absolute no.
Bad loaders - wastes too much of my precious spare time
All over chestnut with no white - just don't like it.
Bad in traffic - just no way....

Where do we begin:

Needs to have good feet

And good confomation

Can cope with splints and bumps

Would never touch anything that had done a tendon or ligaments etc

Needs to be good in open spaces.

Needs to be ale to stop within reason.

Good with hounds

Good to load and to clip.

Needs manors

No Vices

And anything thats grey has always got a place in my heart.

No rearers (only thing my YO, who I have a great deal of respect for, wouldnt have one so neither will I), no lunatics (i am not good enough to deal with it), I wouldnt buy it if it wouldnt load or isnt good to catch. Life is too short and horses cost too much to put up with that. Also musnt have any existing health conditions, again horses are expensive enough and anything can happen, why take on existing problems if you dont have to.

From owning my current horse whom is great i would also say if i was looking to buy again i would be looking for half decent conformation (if one with potential) unless said horse had proven comp record and was otherwise perfect as find it does make life easier.

Like when i was looking for my last one, at my level i am not looking for a world beater just something to have fun on and be in the running at local low level comps be that jumping or dressage.

I only hack so I don't ask for amazing paces or great jumping ability, these are my no nos;

Don't really want a gelding
Bad in traffic
Rearers
Aggressive temperament
Sweet itch or laminitis
Bad feet
Bad to catch.

No to a warmblood for me, I like to watch them but just don't 'get' them.
Nothing that involves walking round and round and round a field for hours to catch
And, no to rug wreckers!

No rearers
No napping (not forward thinking)
No sweet itch
No wind sucking
No greys preferably unless amazing (melanoma/keeping clean)
No bolters
Must hack out alone, although don't mind if a bit spooky etc
No lami
No sarcoids
No bad feet / bad shoers

Other than the obvious of wanting a horse with no obvious health issues:

No sweet itch
No headshakers
No stress heads or seperation anxiety issues - had too many of those... and its exhausting!
Must be good in traffic
Most importantly it must not have a nasty temperament - no ears back, turning bums, lifting legs. I like being around horses and would hate to think they dont want to be around me and that I couldnt trust them. Once a horse kicks me to connect for no obvious reason then I never really trust it.
Rearers I can cope with, buckers scare me so thats a no too!

Loading, bargey behviour, not wanting to be caught, shod, clipped, nappiness etc I can live with as those problems can be dealt with

Would rather not have one with sarcoids.

Hope my mare is with me for a long long time as she is soooo easy and nice - I would dread trying to find another one that lived up to her.

Anything that doesn't want to want to be with me.

I don't want a horse that hates doing anything asked of it. No fun for either of us. I want one that connects with me and wants to work together.

I chose my last (totally inappropriate but led by my heart) horse because I had that feeling that she was the one. She shadows me everywhere and we have a great bond. She can be flat out terrified and will look to me to see that it's okay.

We have a very similar personality and both clumsy as each other, which makes leading interesting!

Even if she turned out unrideable for the next 30years I wouldn't get rid.

I love this exactly the same as me, i fell for my new horse in five minutes and she was home in 5 days, i adore her and if she had three legs i think i still would have bought her lol, ive only had her a few weeks and up to now everything the old owner said seems to be true, i got my perfect pony, i cant wait to get that bond like you have, i know its there.

Big no no's for me are nappy and bronkers, loading isnt a masssive issue as it can be worked on and catching isnt a major but there is only 5 horses on my yard and they all come intogether and out together so they tend to follow in suit x

Grey,chestnut,palomino.
Bad to load or catch. Traditional, hairy cob types. After my current horse would try & avoid a poor doer, feed sensitive horse again! Would also avoid anything that was stuffy to jump. Also wouldn't touch anything that didn't hack in traffic. And would never buy anything with sarcoids.

No mares- we don't get on.
No major health issues
No major conformational faults
No nasty eyes/ grumpy faces
No "bad to load/travel" already have one that's terrified of anything with a ramp.
No ready broken/started/backed
No overhandled youngsters/lack of human respect/bolshy
No ex TB's known to many recurrent lame ones. Preferably have some native blood.
Nothing over 15.2hh

Hmm, I could go on, but I'll leave it there!

For me it's got to be bad confo
And health issues ,
.temperment ,
Any other problem such feet handling ,catching , rearing, bronc , and any others can be dealt with if you experinced enough

I would buy your horses I think they're lovely. :D

Although I've always known my little horror is pretty much unsellable, I could probably pay someone to take him away from me though. :p

Kokopelli, nothing to do with this thread, but I really like your signature pictures and I think you are jumping quite alarmingly high in the middle picture, or rather your pony is..

if i get on with it theres nothing i wouldnt consider taking on (for the right price) but get bored easily if a horse has no personality! but it does depend what i wanted it for, conformation and some injuries must be taken into consideration.

My two priorities are good to shoe with picking feet..I mean 100% rock solid no nastiness etc. Dont tolerate anything that kicks out. I once viewed a pony and the guy picked its back leg up and couldnt let go as it was trying to get him, he practically lifted the animal off the ground!! I like to know I can walk up to a horse in field and pick its feet out whilst it stands still for me..that is perfect horse!

200% traffic. I live near main road.

If third no rear/buck/bolt...but to be fair might not find that one out at trial. Hacks alone and in company...etc etc
