i have in the past been very sceptical of this but am now seriously considering it as my new boys behaviour is getting stranger and i have done all the usual saddle fitter, physio, dentist, Vet. He was previously a sweety but unbelievably behind the leg, was ridden ALL the time in draw reins, unfit and was not being fed anything so very under par (i got him from a dressage rider who deals in dutch horses) No one knows his history, he is an 11yr old and came over last winter in a shipment from holland. Whilst trying him out i discovered he has estabished changes, jumps 1.25m with ease and rode through a medium test beautifully. His passport is not filled in properly and is missing all the forms/ papers from the back.
I got him home, binned the draw reins and began feeding him as he was skinny, started working him long and low as he is a complete giraffe! after a hiccup when feeding mix and he went bonkers, we got back on track and even went to a show!
For the last week he has been awful, objecting to the contact, rearing without warning, full on nearly over backwards jobbies canter is none existant, it it a series of bounces, rears, bombing off and leaping in the air until i get scared and try and stop; no brakes. I have no choice but to pull and hey presto a rear!
I have been doint some research into tension patterns in horses and a lot of what Sarah fisher says - http://www.tilleyfarm.co.uk/tension.html fits my horses behaviour. Coupled with not knowing his history i am thinking Reiki would help us. What do you think, i really have tried everything else and am not a numpty, he is not just testing me, he is trying to tell me something i am sure.
Glass of wine if you got this far!

Hi, don't know how much help this will be but just thought i'd say that a horse at my old yard who had had a pretty nasty start to life and was nervous and jumpy and constantly very tense used to have Reiki done on her. It really seemed to work to calm her down. She used to have it done usually once a day and she was very relaxed and easy going afterwards. She had a broken pelvis when she was just a baby, so she used to have a lot of Reiki round that area and it really seemed to help her painful/sensitive area.

Hope this helps in some way!

my welsh pony had reiki, it was a friend of the family who did it so no charge. she loved it.

Weird thing was I used to hold her , had to be end of leadrope not touching whilst she had it done ,but each time without fail it made me have bad wind afterwards..

I can't comment on reiki treatment but I can certainly recommend cranio sacral treatment. Its an all over treatment and the lady I use, Julie Houghton, is also a reiki master.

I had many problems with my horse and tried vets, physio, saddle after saddle fitting and was at a total loss of what to do next. I changed farriers which helped but still not quite right so tried cranio sacral as nothing to lose as was at a total loss what to do. After 24 hours of rest after the treatment my horse is a different horse! Every day I notice something new (positive) or some behaviour (negative) that has disappeared. I am so thankful to Julie for sorting my boy out. :D

The vets charged me £6k plus, physio every month for 6 months then quarterly over a 18 month period at £65 a time, saddle fitters etc and Julie cost me £66!! £50 for treatment then shared travel on top. :D I so wish I had Julie first!! Hindsight is a funny thing!!:p

What checks did the vet do? Would it be worth having your horse checked out by another reputable equine vet, for a second opinion?

Personally I would not want to pay for Reiki, because I prefer to take a scientific approach and go with what has the clinical evidence of working. http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/reiki.html

When you say back pages of the passport - would that be where "loss of use" or major medication would be noted? That could be a big red flag... Do you think he might have had a major problem of some sort in the past, and is breaking down after being ridden for a while? How long have you had him?

My horse went through a phase of displaying very similar behaviour and after having vet, teeth and tack checked, i came across reiki when a lady who is a reiki therapist moved onto our yard. I was very sceptical but she was very reasonable so decided to give it a try. My horse absolutely loves her reiki sessions and you can visibly see her relax, she moves better and morse balanced after a treatment. I should say that i also used a chiropractor alongside who as well as "putting it all back in place" uses a deep tissue massage machine which she leant to me one weekend so that i could get a really good treatment in. Toffs is a much more relaxed horse now and the vertical rears have totally stopped (she does sometimes have a tb mare tantrum and chuck in the odd half rear)

I would definitely recommend trying it, it is non invasive and every horse i have seen treated loves it.

pm me if you want details of my lady, i am hampshire/wiltshire border.

p.s. when holding horses for a treatment i will sometimes get very woozy myself but summerleft i have never had wind pmsl he he he he he he he he
