What are your horses chesnuts like

Can horses chesnuts sometimes be used to age a horse? Its just that my Marleys are described as pieces of wood, they are like large thick corks he is 10 ish, but then everythibg is big on him. My other horses chesnuts are smallish and she is 16. Should I have them cut, they stick out about 3inches probably the lengh of your little finger! It just seems a feature of the horse that seems pointless and overlooked, your thoughts please

you can twist them off or you can ask your farrier to trim them next time he comes. Candyman gets big chestnuts as well.His are quite tough so I have to get the farrier to take them off for me.

I think you only need to consider having them cut, if they're causing the horse a problem But saying that, from this thread i've learnt now that you can have them removed!

I quite enjoy a good pick if they're softened after a bath! My boy doesn't mind. The farrier has trimmed them in the past too. Not a fan when they're too long!

vaseline or baby oil helps to soften them and you can pick them off. My 6yr old mares are HUGE! I've got the farrier to cut them back every time he comes, you have to be careful with large ones and do them a bit at a time as they can bleed and when they do they bleed alot!!
