I was just wondering what you all think about reiki healing, has anyone used it or do you think its all a big rip off. Would it help a nervous pony with not a lot of trust in humans? If you have had it done please tell me if it was worth it.

Total bo**ocks if you ask me :D Totally unscientifically proven - the fact that if they claim to heal you in an advert then they get fined for false advertising should say something ;)

I think it depends on who does it: I have a truly inspirational man who uses reiki as well as his excellent professional qualifications as as an equestrian orthopedic specialist. He has worked wonders for both my horses over a period of at least fifteen years. He treats horses for the rich and famous as well as nonentities such as me and mine. I have never heard anything but good about him.

I tried a session for myself a few years ago just to see what it was all about....it felt very relaxing......but that was about it. I think proper relaxation has physical and mental health benefits so I do believe from that point of view it can be beneficial, but I think all the mystic stuff is rubbish........also I wouldn't pay for any 'remote' reiki treatments, all nonsense imo.

I have had many reiki sessions done on both myself and my horses by a few different people and yes I have seen a significant difference in my health and my horses happiness. I have been attuned to Reiki myself and treat myself my horses and friends and family, As are my dad and my step mum. If you do not believe in it then that’s up to you however I don’t think it’s fair to tar everybody with the same brush.

The issue I find is that people expect a miracle and when they don’t notice a difference straight away then they are convinced it does not work.

placebo effect... I am sure for some people know that someone is out there sending their thoughts and healing hands is a very valuable thing but I have friends who have paid a fortune to train as Reiki healers who then 'send' its a complete pile on nonsense but the placebo effect has proven to have some scientific value.

Personally I prefer think positive thoughts... ;)

A friend who is a Reiki wotsit just happened to be on the yard when I was working away at getting a young horse to stand at the mounting block. After watching me for a few minutes she offered to help. She spent a few minutes with her while I stood back, glad to let the horse have a moment to think things through. Then she said, 'You can get on her now, she'll be fine.'
The horse lined up at the block, stood rock still and I got on. She has continued to be the same ever since.
She also told me some pretty amazing things about another horse both physically, which I could verify and emotional some things from his past which are in line with what I know already but some of which, I couldn't say how correct it was because I wasn't there.
I wouldn't seek out a reiki treatment from an unknown person, but, I have to say, my experience was impressive.

I have a friend who is a 'qualified' REiki healer ! She is in poor health, her husband is in poor health, always goes straight to the Vet with anything poorly & yet still believes she can heal. As the old saying goes 'Physician heal thyself', It's all total moonshine.

IMO it has it's uses, years ago we had a very stressy GSD, ate the house whenever she was left, undid childlocks on fridges/freezers, raided ovens, she had company and was never left for long, but it reached the point where I couldn't afford to keep replacing ovens, settees etc so considered pts.
I contacted (via work) a reiki healer who dealt with police horses and dogs, she came and within 20 mins this dog was lying at her feet totally relaxed, never been known before, we had her for years after that, still stressy but manageable.
We also dealt with death row dogs and a volunteer was a reiki healer and helped many of the dogs in the kennels.
There's good and bad in all things

Strange woman at yard came up to my horse when he'd got a bit of a tendon injury - started stroking his legs in an odd way.... I had to hold back the laughs!!

But you know, now 2 years on he's all fixed so maybe it worked! ;-)

Absolute load of turd!

I can only see it maybe being beneficial mentally to those people who truly believe in it, by lifting their hopes and spirits. Possibly, I suppose you could argue to an extent that as a result, the immune system may be boosted. But I really resent the idea of people taking money from people by pushing the notion that this can heal their animals..particularly when said animal hasn't been seen by a vet as a result of people's belief of such.

To be fair, at least she takes her animals to a vet - some wouldn't if they thought they could heal them themselves!

^This. Even if you don't accept the wafty side of it, proper relaxation does have proven benefits in terms of getting the body to heal itself.

And from that point of view I can verify that it works in vetgates to lower heart rates :whistles:

Rubbish. It doesn't actually DO anything in my experience.

There are plenty of other techniques that can be tried with nervous horses. Tellington-Touch is very good. Very gentle, moving the skin in small circles over the horse's body using different strength depending on where the technique is being used and how the horse reacts. Works on humans too.

Perhaps you didn't choose wisely, further to my other post on here, no money changed hands, both healers did it for the benefit of the animals

my neighbour and i had a conversation about this a couple of years ago.
She explained she could send vibes over the phone and heal things. this would be a valuble service that people would pay for.
In all honesty if she can get someone to give her money to pay her to think about their poorly aunty mary over the phone then hats off to her.
no overheads, and best of all you can think about aunty mary while doing your ironing.
MARVELOUS.

Was personally very sceptical about reiki, until I watched my boy receiving some reiki healing after a recent massage. He visibly really relaxed and 'let go'. I don't know if it has actually done anything to help the problem (something emotional rather than physical) as we have not been in that situation again yet, but it certainly had an effect on my boy at the time!
